Class A Single Channel Amplifiers

Class A amplifiers have a sound of their own and many great recordings over the years have been made on low and medium wattage Class A amplifiers. They provide a very sweet smooth sound that seems to 'sing' and when the master volume is near full on the Class A distortion is fantastic a must for Jazz and Blues players. The clean sound of a Class A is very, very fat and the great thing is you can get the full range of sounds at lower volumes. The 12 Watt versions make great practice and recording amplifiers but many players also use them mike'd up on stage and the 20Watt versions have the punch to carry small clubs and most pubs even with a drummer!

As with all classes of valve guitar amplifiers two types of distortion are available, over-driven pre-amp stage and over-driven power output stage. The great thing about this low wattage Class A amp is you can use it with full master volume settings and it produces the smooth fat tone of classic vintage amplifiers at a volume suitable for home use.

Options of valve, solid state or switch-able rectifiers are available. An amplifier of this design can only achieve classic vintage tones if the correct valves are used, so we only use high quality New Old Stock (NOS) output valves. The amp shown here is fitted with an RCA 6V6GT made in 1944.

All the Dave Hall Class A single channel amplifiers have an extra stage of gain selectable via the guitar input jack. When the guitar is plugged into the High gain socket the Gain knob on the front panel comes into play and it controls the amount of pre-amp over-drive distortion for a bit more of a rock tone but still smoother than a Class AB. There is a valve driven parallel effects loop with a wet/dry mixer control for the addition of effects and reverb.

12 Watt Class A Combo

We are currently offering a few versions of a 12 Watt Class A combo (actually its more like 8 Watts but it is very loud and nobody believes me when I tell them it's 'only 8 Watts'!). The options are a valve, solid state or switch-able rectifier, 1x12" or 2x12" Combo, valve driven 3-spring reverb, parallel effects loop and black tolex or vintage tweed covering.

All of the Class A Dave Hall guitar amplifiers are design to produce classic vintage tone in the style of amplifiers made in the 50’s and 60’s. The tone is rich and fat with smooth distortion and a great clean sound that is only possible with Class A.

We are also working on a 30 Watt Class A design using the famous KT88 valve which will be to same specification as the 12 and 20 Watt versions but even louder.
