A total of 10 high quality valves are used in all twin channel designs producing the widest range of tones possible. Channel 1 gives very warm soft tone of a 50s US tweed with a very Fat clean sound up to around half volume. But push Channel 1s 12AX7 input valve a bit harder and a great blues tone is there with lovely soft breakup distortion and unbelievable bass without losing the top bite.
Channel 2 has a selectable 2 stages of gain available, plus Bright, Mid and Bass Boost switches; this provides the user with an almost unlimited range of tones and levels of distortion. The tones possible from Channel 2 include a 60s Brit Plexi, US Twin, Classic top boost 60s combo and modern high gain. Sustain and tone are what this channel is all about and by finding the right combination of gain, tone, volume and master volume setting any guitarist can find and develop his or her own sound, its in there!
1x12 or 2x12 speaker options are available in Celestion Vintage 30 or Celestion Greenbacks. Covering options include Tolex or Tweed.
A 3 spring accutronics reverb unit is an option and it uses 2 driver valves and a 3W reverb transformer for a real valve reverb sound. The parallel effects loop is standard on all amps and it uses 2 stages of gain (1 x 12AX7) to provide an in-phase mix. The level of the wet/dry mix of the effects loop is adjustable via a rear panel pot.
A Triode/Pentode switch is fitted on the rear panel as standard. When in normal Pentode mode the output valves are wired in a Pentode configuration and will provide the full output possible with the Class AB bite at the top end. But switch to Triode configuration and the power is reduced by about 40% and a very sweet warm tone is generated when driven hard which is very similar to a Class A.
Cathode or Grid bias is selectable via a switch on the rear panel. When Cathode bias is selected a warm smooth sound is generated by the output valves which removes alot of the attack, once again just like a Class A. Grid bias is the most common method of output valve biasing so when selected you get lots of Class AB bite
The type of output valves used is are optional, 6V6GTs (25W) and 6L6 (50W) are one option and provide a very soft fat sound great for Jazz, Blues and Rock. EL84 (25W) and EL34 (50W) output valves are the other option and they have a tighter more compressed sound with a harsher breakup distortion just the thing for Rock and Heavy Metal.
All Dave Hall amps use a GZ34 valve rectifier (thats what the VR means!) which really comes into effect when the amplifier is used at medium and high power. When used like this the amplifier will compress and sustain notes and chords without losing tone in a way that no solid state rectifier circuit can.
