One of the places I was most excited to see was
Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, FL.  We got settled at the KOA
campgrounds and since it was early afternoon,
we decided to take a drive through the Safari.  I guess
I should say we took several drives through that day
and went back the next day too!  It was wonderful!!

So settle in and buckle up for a look at

Lion Country Safari

Upon entering the drive-through area,
we were greeted by several Black Vultures.

It looks like they're sharing a meal with
this Tortoise but pictures don't always
tell the truth.  Right after I snapped this,
the Vultures snatched the bowl of food
away from him!

There were signs telling us that
the animals have the right of way on
the roads.  And this Water Buffalo was in no hurry
to get out of the way.  Guess he read the sign huh?

Greater Kudu
Aren't they beautiful?

The Chimpanzees had an island
all to themselves.  This one was
getting a drink from the moat
surrounding the habitat.

Waterbucks have a target-like pattern
on their rumps.  In the wild,  they elude
predators by submerging themselves
in water up to their nostrils.

These Southern White Rhinoceros look
cute, splashing together in the water...but

this one decided he didn't want his picture taken
and believe me....

he got close enough to the car I could have
reached out and petted him!  Of course,  while looking
through the camera,  he appeared further away than he
actually was.  So when I lowered the camera, you can
imagine my shock to find him RIGHT next to me!
Frank thought it was funny when I tried to climb
in the driver's seat with him!

These are Sacred Ibis and the pictures
can't begin to truly show the gorgeous
colors in their feathers.

Because you're not allowed to feed the animals in the Safari,
this male and female Ostrich weren't interested in getting too
close to the car.  If you've seen my Natural Bridge Wildlife page,
you'll understand my relief in this!

Frank was quite disappointed that they have fenced the lions in.
But this African Lioness still looks majestic to me.

Notice the Giraffe looking at the camera.

He decided we weren't invited to
their dinner party and

came over to usher us away!  When he
got beside the car,  all we could see from
the window were knee caps!  I thought he
was going to walk right over the top of us!!

See why they call this fellow
a Roseate Spoonbill?

Now we go to the walk-through part
of the park.  This fellow is a Marabu Stork.

Notice the ripples in the water?  The male
alligator was bellowing to impress the female.

Even after being ushered from their dinner party,
Frank decided to make friends with the Giraffe.
Notice the purple tongue reaching out
for the cracker he's offering.

We found the aviary and

Frank made several friends with a cup of nectar!

At the end of the drive-through section,  there is a pond.  We saw
these geese in the water every time we went through.  After about
3 trips through the Safari,  I started noticing they hadn't moved!
Frank stopped the car,  and that's when we noticed the
water line on them.  That's right,  they were decoys!!!!
