Above is prototype 5 and the final version of the Edge
as kit'ed and flown at NEAT 2001. Thanks to John Tracey of CT for
this handsome photo. I spent more time on on the finish of this model
and this might be a bit more paint area than one needs but it is on there
very light and thin! This ship weighed 10.5oz and was built from
production tools and average wood.
Prototype #3, this was the first one we put paint on,
30" wingspan, horizontal was too high. A great ship but the kit version
represents the best of all our design efforts. Weight was 10.6oz.
And
now for the movie! Pilot is Chris Fry of Dayton Ohio. (hosted with
thanks to James Hausman)
The above video clips are powered by the standard GWS370-A motor with
modified gearbox.
All the above video is on the GWS370-A modified gearbox.
Still very strong, 301 is even better.
The new Radical EDGE 540 is a hopped-up Speed 280/300 (40 to 60 watts) powered ship that is truly on the "Edge". 10 minute flights, loops, rolls, snaps, knife, (yes, you did read correctly, KNIFE!), waterfalls, torque rolls, rolling circles, spins etc. etc. etc. Power to weight ratio is just better than 1:1 at 11 oz thrust.. Span 28", weight 10.5 to 10.6 oz. We've recently had a report form Todd Langston that his finished at 10.2 oz! Jason Noll completed his at 10.2oz. as well. They've outdone the designers! If you research all the aerobatic 4 channel park fliers you'll soon find this is the lightest one yet kit'ed in the S-280 / S-300 category. Not by a measly few 10ths of an oz! We raised the bar very high by beating all other kits, most of them by 2.5 oz or more.
The design intent is to have a fully aerobatic 3-D ship, ultra light weight, good vertical and definitely "not" another boring floater! The low wing loading makes this model indoor capable in larger areas. It also handles wind well out of doors where it is primarily flown by us. We've flow the prototype in 5 to 10 MPH winds extensively. If your ready for something different, give it a try! This is the ship that will make all your buddies stand up and take notice of E-Flight and it's potential.

I can come down inverted about 2 inches off the ground
coming straight at me, pitch the nose up about 2 feet in front of me, and
torque roll it about chest high, arm's length away, and grab it!!! It's
so cool!!
I think your design is great!!! Jason Noll, AZ |
Troque rolling over the drink! Now, that's competent confidence! |
Jason torque rolling in the Arizona breeze! |
Dave,
This is by far the funnest airplane i have ever flown! I have more fun with this thing than my 40% airplanes! It is so forgiving and soft that I can torque roll it in my living room. great job!! Jason Noll Jason's pretty good but we're still waiting on the living room picture. ;-) Dave |

Hi Dave,
I've been flying my Edge for just over
a week now. It is an impressive machine! I'm really enjoying it!
Everyone who sees it fly is amazed! A lot of them are seriously considering
E-Flight now! .....................Mine weighs 10.4 oz(batt. included).
Today, I installed an E-Cubed antenna, so no more dragging a wire around
- it made a noticeable difference - much better power off glides.
I'm able to takeoff from grass no problem. I'm able to take off a
5 foot long table that is 45" off the ground. I hold the tail, run
up full power and let go! I've flown in wind that was a steady 12
mph, and in gusts estimated at 16 mph! Fluid Fuel Flyers weren't
even flying cause if was "too windy"! I've hand launched underhand and
overhand. I'm able to catch the airplane for retrieval! (especially
on windier days). I set up some chairs outside at our field
to mark the corners of a make-believe room that is 35' by 80' - the plane
flys around in that space without a hitch! My Edge is slightly
tail heavy(I built it that way on purpose). It does every maneuver
that I can think of doing......
Thanks for all your help, and for producing the Edge.

A stunning photo:
Here the pre-flight photo after getting it all set up
last night.
Jerry Brown proves you can cover with the right materials and still come in within specifications. Outstanding Finish Jerry! Maybe we need to put an eye protection warning on this photo as I think everybody's eyes are popping out about now. SPECIAL NOTE, Jerry's ship will be on the new box labels for a while. We intend to rotate photo's. So, be sure to send your picture in! At a later date after many flights:

I'm getting more comfortable and this thing is
amazing!! Most of the flight is 1/2 throttle and bursts of full when
needed. LONG flights for electric, 9 or 10 minutes. Knife Edge
is great at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. Point rolls, square loops, hands
off inverted, spins, inverted flat spins, I went thru my entire
routine. Great climb rate and might be able to torque roll after
I get the thrust lined up right. All in all a really FUN airplane
if you are able to put it thru it's paces. The amazing part
also is the landings are a dream.
Slows way down and you just drag her in. You know it flys pretty similar to my Morris Sudokoi except you can do it in your front yard or local park. Too cool!! I'm afraid some peoples flying skills might not be honed enough to appreciate this plane. Sad. I anxiously await your 2 gram smoke system! 8) Peace, Jerry Brown Sorry folks, I wish we had a smoke system for this bird! Thanks for the great report Jerry! Jerry's throttle management is keeping him in the sweet spot of the pack for a long time. He's obviously knows how to optimize the power system And months later from Jerry on 5-21-02

Hey Dave, B. Frost from Fla. We'll, took the edge out for the first time today, wow, wow, wow is all I can say. What a plane. This is the best flying electric plane I've ever owned, it hovers great with flight time over 10 minutes. Came in right at 10 oz. once agian what a plane I'll probably be getting another!
06/03/02 Dave,
No need to reply, I know you're busy. I purchased an Edge540 kit
from you at Top Gun, along with the accessories. Just finished it
and started flying
it this past weekend. I just wanted to congratulate you on the
achievement of creating and selling the remarkable Edge 540. This
is such an impressive plane I'm not sure
where to start. How about that I am selling all of my gas/glow
powered aerobats since the Edge is much more precise and fun!
I have come to realize the price for the kit/motor, etc represents not
only the parts in the kit, but also the countless hours of development
needed to make this plane perform so well. I wish there was an easy
way to communicate this to all of those thinking about buying one, but
hesitating
due to price, etc. Thank you and all involved in getting it to market!

This kit is intended for experianced pilots who understand what it means to have a super light weight high performance machine. It's not designed to crash, but it is designed to fly better than anything you've ever seen or flew before. The ship is sensitive and has very agressive control surfaces. If your ready for something extreeme then here is your machine.
Battery packs, 8 cell 720 has great power full 3D and is my personal favorite. The 8 cell 720 pack is the best all around pack with full 3D capability. We've also had pilots comment they like the 7 cell 800 very well but still consider it experimental. These are all NiMH packs. Sorry, NiCads just don't make the grade on this high performance ship.
Flying time with "Good Performance" on the 8 cell 720, throttle fire walled 7 minutes, aerobatics routines and all around flying 9-11 minutes, easy cruising 14 minutes.
Construction is simple and innovative! You'll soon see why "Kit Builders have more fun".
Yes, its a foam wing. With the extra weight of a built up wing and covering: hover, torque rolls and a positive power to weight ratio would not be achieved.
ORDERS taken now. Fax or phone or PayPal are best. Please only order this kit if you are ready to build it. Production is limited and we want the Beta runs in the hands of people who can build them and offer constructive comment. Unlike many ships, this one was prototyped in many versions until it is as correct as we could make it. Over 6 months invested! Won't it be nice to get the latest ship with all the engineering peaked right out of the box? With each production run we've made updates and changes to the instructions thanks to all the helpful feedback.
Supplement to Instructions Check here for latest builder hints and tips. All these items to be added to instructions eventually. You may or may not have them in yours.
