Mobile Observation and Imaging Unit

Photo of the Mobile Observation and Imaging Unit. I constructed this trailer to take to remote sites. With it I can utilize Personal Computers to control all 3 telescopes, (the 7" APO refractor, 8" LX-200 SCT and the 16" LX-200 SCT) and the CCD Imaging Cameras. The Unit contains 2 166mghz Computers used to control the scopes and cameras, and 1 200 mghz Computer to use for image processing. All three computers are connected via a LAN network hub so file transfers are easily accomplished. I presently use the following software in telescope control and image acquisition and processing: The Sky version IV for telescope control and database, CCDSoft Image acquisition software, Hidden Image processing software, and Adobe Photoshop for tweeking the images. For hardcopy of images a Fujitzu NC-2 digital photo/video printer provide nice 4 X 6 photographs. Two bunk beds were installed for napping during image acquisition and sleeping during the daylight hours. Once the raise up panel and door are closed you can not see your hand in front of your face which makes it really easy to sleep during the day. An Air Conditioner keeps the heat out and provide home creature comfort. A Television was installed which connects to the Astrovid Video Camera for Live Real Time Observing of the Planets, Moon, and Sun (utilizing a Daystar Tilt Scanner). A Mobile Phone was added and I installed a Mobile Satellite System so I can watch TV, check the weather, etc when I am in remote locations. (like Ft. Davis, Texas where regular TV reception is not possible). Removable Security Cameras are installed on the exterior and feed two Security Monitors installed beneath the TV. The low light level cameras provide a means to be able to watch the scopes at night while in use to insure that cords do not tangle. I hope to add a complete weather satellite reception center and satellite time receiving station in the near future. And to top it all off it also has room inside to tote my local transportation device: 1997 FXSTC Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
