Mort Sahl on Lenny Bruce

I worked in the Interlude upstairs. Downstairs, Jerry Southern had the commercial acts like the Mary Kaye Trio. And a house comedian named Lenny Bruce. And Lenny used to sit there and play sophomoric, anti-authoritarian games. One night through the ventilator I heard him playing a prom - we had three or four hundred high school kids - and he had them chanting "Lynch Mort Sahl". Then he would come upstairs to my club and order a drink and then say very loudly, "Let’s see…ten cents for the cost of the liquor , five cents for the labor". He would itemize the bill them start to yell "You’re crooks, You are crooks". If he could make a few people uncomfortable he enjoyed it…..I used to go down and catch his show and he would come up and catch my show. This was before the liberals got a hold of him. And the Civil Liberties attorneys. At the time, he didn’t swear, he just talked about the movies. And he was pretty damn funny. Ad-libbed a lot, which very few do even today…. I found Lenny to be a funny comedian, a great impersonator, and a very sentimental guy. I did not find him profound, and I disagree with those who now put him on a cross. Even Lenny knew that only you can kill yourself
