| Alice's poem Deacon Foster's Pew (R) |
Buelahs' parents separated while she was growing up. At the time she was graduating from Bethlehem high school she was living with her father in Bethlehem NH. At this time her older sister, Alice, was either living with their mother or out on her own. Buelah's valedictory speech for the class of 1899 was on "Burden Bearing". Her graduating class was only about 5 people. She apparently kept house for her father. There is the story about the blueberry pie that she made once. She used dried blueberries or something like that and after it was baked the pie rattled. She took the pie to a neighbor for help. The neighbor showed her how to cut it open, moisten the berries, and reseal the pie. Her father, Charles, died while she was living with him. Beulah reportedtly found him slumped over the wood pile in the kitchen one morning.
