John Tuttle3, (Symon2, Thomas1) b. abt 1596 in England; Baptism 4 Jun 1596 in Holcot, Northamptonshire, England. He m. Joan Antrobus, in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. She was b.bef. 25 Jun 1592 in England; Baptism 25 Jun 1592 in St. Albans, Hertfordforshire, England. She d. after 29 Jan 1660/1661. He was of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Mrs. Joanna Tuttle was attorney for her husband, then living in Ireland [LTR p485]. Together with his wife, and his brothers William and Richard (both of Ringstead Northants, England) and their families, came in 1635 on the ship Planter, in 1635, to America, and settled at Ipswich, Mass. He was at the time 39 years old, and his wife was 42 years old. Mr. Tuttle was her second husband, her first husband having been Thomas Lawrence, and she brought with her to this country three Lawrence children (John, Mary & William). Mr Tuttle subsequently returned to Ireland, and d. at Carrickfergus, in that country, Dec. 30, 1656. Children:--

In 1678 he had the right of commonage in Ipswich; d. Jan. 1692; his second wife  (Sarah) d. Jan 24, 1732.

Lieut. Samuel6, (Simon5, Simon4, John 3, Symon2, Thomas1), was the seventh child, b. May 19, 1709, in Ipswich, Mass.; d. December 11, 1780 in Littleton, Mass.[LTR p370]; m. in 1729, Martha Shattuck, dau. of Rev. Benjamin Shattuck, the first ordained minister of Littleton Mass.; She was b. Jan. 7, 1712. He is buried in the Old Town Cemetary in Littleton. The epitaph on his gravestone reads:

"Frail man as soon as born decays.
Like flowr that quickly faid;
He counts a few and troublous days,
Then passes like a shade."

Sampson7, (Samuel6, Simon5, Simon4, John 3, Symon2, Thomas1), was the sixth child[HOH p933], b. Aug. 29, 1738; d. June 7, 1815; was graduated at Harvard College in 1757; int. Dec. 13,1760 [LTR p223] m1. April 21, 1761, Submit Warren, dau. of Jacob Warren, who was b. March 17, 1742; d. July 21, 1797 (July 24, 1797 [LTR p124]buried July 26, 1797 [LTR p344]) . Sampson and Submit were married by Rev. Daniel Rogers [LTR p81]. He m2. Rebekah Trowbridge (intention filed Sept. 23, m. Oct. 8, 1799 [LTR p242]). Rebekah d. Nov. 11, 1823 at age 44. All three are buried side by side in the Old Town Cemetary in Littleton. Sampson and "Rebeccah" had one daughter named Mary, who was b. July 11, 1800[LTR p41] . His gravestone identifies him as, "Sampson Tuttle Esq.". His epitaph reads:

"Quick flees the shadow Man
Whose days are but a span."

Submit's gravestone has no epitaph but includes the names of 3 children that are buried with her. Rebekah's gravestone is inscribed with the epitaph:

"My savior calls and I must go
And leave you here my friends below
But soon my god will call for thee
Prepare for death and follow me"

1. Sampson8, (Sampson7, Samuel6, Simon5, Simon4, John 3, Symon2, Thomas1), b. in Littleton, Mass., April 19, 1765; came to Hancock NH. in 1785; boarded for a short time with Salmon Wood (q. v.); settled at a place marked "R. Tuttle," on a Hancock map, where he continued to res. until the close of his life. He was one of the leading citizens of the town, and highly respected. He held many positions of trust; was one of the selectmen several years, and a commision of justice of the peace was sent him, but he did not accept it .He was however, known as Esquire Tuttle, but at the earnest Request of his dau., Anna, he was not so designated him in the published history of Hancock. He was married on Feb. 24, 1789 to Sarah Fletcher, of Westford, Mass. by Rev. Edmund Foster on Feb. 24, 1789 (The marriage was recorded in Littleton, Mass. Johnathan Reed , Justice of the Peace [LTR p234]) Sarah was b. Feb 18, 1762, and d. Oct. 16, 1831; he d. May 24, 1856.

  • 5. Anna9, b. Oct 17, 1799; d. Sept. 20, 1884. After the death of her mother, she continued to res. with her father, and to take care of him until the close of his life. Subsequently she purchased the place marked "J. Mathews," where she res. many years and where she d. She was a worthy Christian woman; industrious and economical, yet generous. Besides remembering her own family, she left,by will, over $1000 to the American Bible Society, and was a regular contributor to many religious and philanthropic objects. There was a receipt for $10, which she gave to constitute Mrs. Patience Ware a member of the Memorial fund, auxiliary to the Female Cent institution, dated June 10, 1872; and another receipt for $30, which she paid for a life membership in the American Bible society, dated June 2, 1847.

6. Sampson9[2], (Sampson8, Sampson7, Samuel6, Simon5, Simon4, John 3, Symon2, Thomas1); m. May 30, 1820, Mary McAllister, of Antrim; he settled on the place marked "S. Tuttle Heirs," which he had purchased of Jacob Emerson. (The McAllister family emigrated from Scotland to Ireland. Richard McAllister m.about the year 1735, Ann Miller,and came to this country in the winter of 1738-39. Their eight child, James, m. Sally, dau. of David McClary, of Bedford in Oct. 1773.) Mary,  the dau. of James and Sally McAllister was, b.Feb.21,1792; d. Nov. 10, 1857; m. Sampson Tuttle. He was rightly respected in town; was chosen in 1819 as one of the committee to visit the schools. He d. Feb. 19, 1857. Children:---

He settled on the homestead, where he continues to res.; In his time he was one of the most respected of the citizens of Hancock NH. He was one of the very few of the men of the second generation from the first settlers, and almost the only man that continued to occupy the farm that his father reclaimed from the wilderness. His wife d. Dec. 13, 1880 aged 78 years. Children:---

As a young man he moved from Hancock to Boston. The years around the turn of the century found him working as a Towerman on the Boston & Albany Railroad. On Nov. 27, 1907, he married Buelah Mae Eastman in West Groton Mass.
