SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - O.J. Simpson's mother, Eunice Simpson, was found dead in her home of natural causes Friday morning. She was 80.
Simpson was a longtime resident of the city's Bayview District and lived in a home bought for her by her football-star son. O.J. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife Nicole and a friend of hers.
Eunice Simpson, a former nurse's aide at San Francisco General Hospital, raised O.J. and her three other children in the city's Potrero Hill housing projects, a cluster of apartments that overlook the old shipyards on San Francisco Bay.
Eunice Simpson was plagued by arthritis and had joint replacement surgery, making it difficult for her to walk. She appeared at her son's murder trial in a wheelchair.
In a moment of high drama at the trial, Mrs. Simpson left her wheelchair and was helped into the witness box. Then, as her son smiled adoringly, she gave the jury an account of her hard life as a divorced mother of four.
She recounted Simpson's recovery from rickets as a child and told them how she, her son and other family members clung together the night after the killings.
