Devon Goral

Devon Goral

Devon Goral was born in Seattle to wealthy parents. After their somewhat mysterious death, he went to live with his grandparents and adopted brother near London, where he was raised and lived the formative years of his life. Although he was coddled and sheltered from the life beyond the walls which separated the rich from the poor, an adventurous spirit burned away in his soul. After witnessing a single violent event at his University graduation, he left the protection of home and began to seek out the dangerous side of post-metamorphosis London.

Seeking a way to rebel against his upbringing, yet not quite willing to risk his own safety, Devon took up a job with Lone Star -- the commercial security service charged with keeping the rich safe from the poor (and the closest thing to a police force that the planet currently knew). This was never meant to last -- conflicts with his superior, Captain Daniel Creighton, and various other people in the Lone Star command structure eventually forced Devon out. But he had learned enough to take his craft private.

Much of Devon's experiences on the street have become fodder for legend (in his own mind), and are likely exaggerated. It wasn't long before he made two very close friends, an orc street samurai named Gunther Blakk and a human decker known only as The Matrix Vixen. Together, they participated in a number of strictly legal adventures on the streets of London. Some might have called them Shadowrunners, but they would never admit to anything so blatant. At least Devon wouldn't.

As he grew and matured, his desire for stability again reasserted itself. The newness of living day-to-day wore off, and he began to seek more legitimate jobs. In only a few years he had discovered a latent talent in street combat, and he had amassed enough funds to enhance his body with cybertechnology. And between his work for Lone Star and on the street, he knew his best talents were in defending others. Not wanting to ever again work for another egomaniacal manager, Devon decided to go solo and become a Protector.

Now on his own, Devon toured England seeking clients who required a skilled single bodyguard or security consultant. Early on he realized that he didn't want to be tied to a single person, so he worked out deals in which he would work special events or high risk periods. This worked out better than expected, as many potential clients couldn't afford protection 24/7, but needed it for a few days or a week at a time. His offensive skills also came in handy in hunting down threats to his clients and eliminating them, something they often weren't expecting. His formal law degree, a rarity for people in his profession, only enhanced his marketability further, as he was able to make use of various legal elements to help safeguard his clients and cause trouble for those who would cause harm to them.

As the years progressed, however, legal and social problems began to make it difficult for him to do his job. He began seeking out opportunities elsewhere in the world. A business associate suggested he consider going even further and leave the Earth altogether, through a dimensional portal. Such travel was not widely understood or publicized, but Devon never shied away from new experiences. With nary a word to his family or friends, he left to meet with business prospects in a city known as RhyDin. Things worked out better than he had planned, and within a month he had set up his practice there.

Business in RhyDin turned out to be somewhat less lucrative than he expected, as the Denizens of RhyDin were not as he was accustomed. He was now expected to combat enemies who had energy weapons, ships, and sometimes even powerful magicks. Although he towered above knights and barbarians (literally as well as figuratively), he felt inundated by those even more advanced than mid-21st-century post-metamorphasis Earth. Although he built up a respectable practice, it was nowhere near the success it was in England. He was forced to find other work just to survive.

Devon started by taking a bartending position at the Red Dragon Inn, a popular establishment considered by many to be the center of RhyDin, only a few months after he had set up residence in a small apartment just a few blocks down the road. This helped stabilize his primary career, as he met contacts bartending that he never would have met as just another boozer. He also rose through the ranks of other workers at the Inn, eventually also working downstairs in the Inn's Duel of Swords Arena and nearby at the Star's End Spaceport Bar. Assisting in the management of these as well as other projects for a time even earned him more money than protecting, and a great deal more publicity.

But the rise to power came a little too quickly for the restless man, and eventually he had to walk away in order to keep his sanity. In order to make up the financial deficit, he began moving into the business world as a security and logistics consultant, a much less rewarding vocation than he was accustomed to. It was okay, however, as this self-described ladies man had something more important to focus his energies on: the woman who tamed him.

When she was first introduced to Devon, Zephyer Storm knew that he was different from other men. He didn't recognize her profound wisdom at first, being far too occupied with the turmoil of his life. But when it became clear that she was not going to let him treat her like any other woman, he finally accepted her into his heart. Their relationship was both passionate and emotional, with each of them dealing with a variety of hurdles that prevented them from trusting and accepting each other. Each success in their relationship came only after a series of trials, making the ultimate triumph all the more triumphant.

Devon and Zephyer have since married, built a house out in the countryside (roughly an hour from RhyDin), and are expecting their first child (not exactly in that order). To support them, Devon stepped out of the field and started a more formal business with his old nemesis Daniel Creighton (who escaped London in fear for his own life). Devon now employs and trains bodyguards and private investigators working in and around RhyDin, which allows him to work out of the safety of his home and build a family.
