Infant Visitation Schedules

Infant Visitation Schedules - Infant visitation schedules can be difficult to establish in the case of divorced parents. It is very important, though, that infant visitation schedules be carefully put together to ensure the proper development of the child and his or her bond with both parents.

Infants are forming parental bonds from the moment they are born. In the case of divorce or separation, infant visitation schedules should be such that a proper bond can be formed between the infant and both parents. The non-custodial parent’s infant visitation schedules should be consistent and routine. Since infants are very routine oriented, this can help to form and maintain the bond between the non-custodial parent and the infant.

Infants are also very aware of their surroundings. Infant visitation schedules should be made so that visits happen in a place where the infant is comfortable. This might be the home of the custodial parent, a grandparent’s home, or the non-custodial parent’s home if it is a consistent and familiar location to the child. For new locations, start with shorter visits and lengthen them slowly to allow the infant to become familiar. Patience is the key to developing new familiar locations for the infant.

Infant visitation schedules should only include overnight visits when the child is completely comfortable with the movement between homes. Once the child understands both locations are comfortable, loving ones, infant visitation schedules can graduate to the inclusion of overnight and multiple night visits to the non-custodial parent.

In order for an infant to feel comfortable, he or she should be sent with personal items. These items may be blankets, stuffed animals, an interactive toy, or even a portable baby swing. Anything the child recognizes and understands as being his or hers will work. The item may vary as the child matures. Making the infant’s transition as comfortable and smooth as possible ensures that infant visitation schedules can develop into routine schedules for the child as he or she matures.

Infant visitation schedules can be very difficult to manage, but it is important for the parents to remember that the emphasis should be on making the infant comfortable. Through cooperation and following some of the guidelines mentioned above, infant visitation schedules can be a growth and bonding opportunity for both parents and the infant.
