The Josiah & Mary Moody Family
of Crawford County, Georgia

Josiah Moody and his wife Mary, both born in North Carolina and thought to be of Irish decent, arrived in Crawford County sometime before the 1830 Census. George Washington Moody is believed to have been a brother or relative of Josiah's who was living in the household in the 1830 census. The children of Josiah and Mary were first named in the 1850 Census: sons, JOSIAH, age 26, b. abt .1824; JAMES M., age 22, b. 1829; ALLISON, age 11 b. abt. 1839; daughters, MARY age 17 b. abt. 1833; CAROLINE, age 14 ? (b. Mar. 18, 1834). From the estate records for Josiah Moody we know at least two additional children survived to adulthood: daughter MALINDA, b. abt 1815 and son WILLIAM b. abt. 1820.

Josiah Moody and sons Josiah (Jr.) are found in the 1852 Tax Digest in Macon Co. Mary Moody is the Mrs. Moody recorded in Macon Co. history as a smallpox victim of an 1858 epidemic and buried in the smallpox cemetery. This epidemic descimated the little town of Oglethorpe. Hundreds died and even more fled. Josiah Moody along with son Allison (A.N. Moody) moved to Rankin Co., MS where is daughters Malinda and Mary were living with their families. However, with the discovery of estate records in Rankin Co, MS, we know that Josiah died on August 14, 1860 in Americus, GA. He is most likely buried in Oak Grove Cemetery there in the plot of son William Moody.

MALINDA m. BASIL/BASWELL COLLUM in Crawford Co, GA in 1837. Their children where: JOHN THOMAS, JOSEPH W., JAMES, MARY JANE, WILLIAM JAMES, GEORGE, THOMAS JEFFERSON and CATHERINE.

WILLIAM MOODY m. FRANCES P. DAVIS in 1847 in Crawford Co., GA. They had one son EDWIN A. MOODY m. ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) BATES HEYS in 1868.

JOSIAH MOODY (JR.) m. BETHIA SPAIN in 1844 in Crawford Co., GA. They had one child: MARY BETHIA MOODY.

MARY A. E. MOODY m. JOSHUA CHERRY probably in Macon Co., GA. In

AMY CAROLINE MOODY m. WILLIAM HANCE TURPIN on December 19, 1852 in Macon Co., GA. They resided in Americus, Ga. Their children were: GEORGE A. TURPIN, JOHN A. TURPIN and MARY LOUISA TURPIN.

ALLISON .N. MOODY: Nothing further is known about Allison N. Moody. He was last mention in his father estate records as in-competent to administer the estate. The meaning of this is not known. His age at this time would have been about 21 years.

JAMES MICHAEL MOODY, born October 26, 1829, married NANCY THOMAS EUBANKS, on October 19, 1851. Nancy was the daughter of ELIJAH and MARTHA N. DICKSON Eubanks who resided on land adjacent to that of Josiah Moody. James avoided the horrors of battle during the War Between the States due to an affliction still found among his descendants today, that of a club foot. James and Nancy reared seven children (of nine born to them) in Crawford Co., continuing to live on the land previously occupied by Josiah and next to Nancy's parents. Sometime after 1880 James and Nancy moved to the southern part of Crawford County. This "home place" was located on the west side of what is now the Knoxville St. extension out of Fort Valley, about 1mile south of its juncture with Georgia Hwy. 42. James died there July 6, 1893 at age 64; Nancy born February 10, 1831, died there May 20, 1919, at age 88. James and Nancy are both buried at Dixon Church Cemetery in Crawford County. The head stone on James's grave records his date of birth as October 26, 1839; however, this is evidently in error since all Census records consistently indicate his year of birth as 1829.

Of the children to survive to adulthood, below is a brief summary of their marriages and their offspring.

Martha Moody first married Joe Striplin and had a son, Joe Striplin, Jr. who died without having children. After Joe Sr.'s death Martha married Tip Marshall but they had no children. Martha is buried at Dixon church next to her parents.

Mary Moody married Benjamin J. Hamlin of Crawford County. They had the following children: Edgar (Ed), Lulu, Alice, Julie, Benjamin Carlton, Sara, Mattie, Nora and Clara Valene.

George Moody married Mollie T. Hartley. Their children were: Fanny Mrytle, James Michael (Jimmy), Mary Elizabeth, Nancy Leola, Lillie Tabitha, and Eva Jewell.

John Moody married Alice E. Scarborough and had the following children: Clifford Albert, Little Berry, Frank Cheatham, William Oscar, Rosa Lee, Effie Gee, Nellie Mae, Gladys Ione and Winnie Ruth.

Sarah married Thomas Napoleon Andrews. Their only child to survive was a son, Monroe.

Charlie Moody married Ollie E. Hudson. Their children were: Annie Pearl, Horace Lee, James Charles, Runa Marthena, Buford Alvey, Harris Nathaniel, Thelma Otera and Luther Terrill.

Lee Moody moved to Texas and married Florence Eula Pealger. Children of this union were: Harris Fain, Tyra Olivia, James Bluford, Thomas Marion, Mary, Wanda Raye, Velma, Shirley Geneva, and twins Nora and Dora.

It is hoped that one day the Crawford County Moodys and Mississippi Moodys will be reunited.
