Alexine GUAY

Alexine GUAY was listed as CASTONEAU by Burroughs in his story about Petite Canada. However, I could never find that  surname anywhere in Kankakee County or Iroquois County. I did see the name GUAY from time to time in and around Petite Canada at the right times, but was never sure. I found Alexine GUAY and his family in the 1860 Illinois census. I also found a Joseph living right next door to him. This Joseph was married to Adelaide BALTHAZOR daughter of Francois Balthazor. I knew there must be a connection but still am not sure. I also have run across Octave GUAY who married Julie Deschamps who was one of Louis DESCHAMPES daughters. Octave, 2nd cousin to Alexis came to Bourbonnais with the Deschamps family about 1855. One reason I think that Castonneau is actually Guay is because a common "dit" name of Guay was Castonguay. and Burroughs from time to time would Americanize old french names, and/or his source for the information-Charles Thibault(mentioned by Burroughs as TEBO)was in his late 80's when he retold the story of Little Canada and could have misnamed the family.

Alexis GUAY was born 1818 in Quebec and was the son of Joseph GUAY and Constance GIRARD. Alexis married Sophie BERTHIAUME in 1838 at Lacadie de St. Jean, Quebec. She was the daughter of Charles BERTHIAUME & Victorie LABOSSIERS.
