BACK TO SIMPSON SOCIETY HOME PAGE

Performance calendar (last revised January 30 2006)

Numerous chamber and brass music performances are scheduled for the winter 2007 season. The Montpellier String Trio will perform Simpson’s String Trio in Bromsgrove on January 6th, and the Matangi Quartet will play Simpson’s 3rd Quartet in Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands on March 18th. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Simpson’s death, the Sorrel quartet will give 3 performances of Simpson’s 7th Quartet in 2007, and the Royal Northern College of Music’s Festival of Brass (Manchester, 27-28th January 2007) will include three of Simpson’s Brass Band pieces. The brass band performances will be recorded and broadcast later on BBC Radio 3 (during the week of 5th-9th of February 2007) in conjunction with the broadcast of all the Symphonies on Afternoon Performance (from 29th January to 9th February 2007). The radio station of Harvard University, WHRB (95.3 FM and streaming on the Internet at www.whrb.org), will be broadcasting a two-day tribute to Robert Simpson to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death, including all the recorded pieces in chronological order. The tribute begins Sunday 28 January at 4 pm Eastern Standard Time, going until midnight, and then Monday 29 January from 8 am to 11 pm. The Pomona College Orchestra will be performing Simpson's Symphony No. 7 twice in early March.

Sometime in the Autumn 2003, the Chamber Orchestra of the Music Department of Lancaster University performed the Seventh Symphony. If anyone knows further details of this performance, please e-mail me at andyjackson0@yahoo.com , including the word "Simpson" in the header.

A memorial concert was held at Wigmore Hall on July 17 2003 at 7:30 pm to commemorate the life of Ted Perry. Proceeds from the concert went towards funding the last CD in the Simpson symphony cycle. This consisted of the City of London Sinfonia playing Symphony No. 11 and the Nielsen Variations conducted by Matthew Taylor.  The CD was recorded on December 11th and 12th 2003, and was released in August 2004.

The US Premiere of Simpson's 7th Symphony took place on May 24th 1999. The students who performed the piece have written some comments on it. Thanks to all of them and to Chris Russell.  Chris Russell's account is here. My own review is available.

If you know of upcoming performances of Simpson's music, please E-Mail me at andyjackson0@yahoo.com (include "Simpson" in the header) and I will try to include your concert. I take no responsibility for the veracity of this information.
