Levi's Jeans that little tag you feared was leather is really (as the company says) polyurethane embedded cardboard
Trader Joe's many products at this great store are vegan and say so (i.e. no animal extracts), including their soap, shampoo, conditioner (recommended), laundry detergents, and other products - prices are extremely good 
Payless Shoes many in style shoes at low prices (LOOK on the label - some are leather but "ALL MAN MADE MATERIALS" should be ok)
Arm and Hammer Baking Soda Toothpaste excellent toothpaste, no animal products (have been environmentally friendly for over 100 years, peta reports they do animal testing, though)
Long Life Veggie House restaurant only in the Berkley, CA neighborhood - well worthwhile (and inexpensive) (2129 University Ave., Berkeley, CA 510-845-6072) 
Cheerio's company claims they are animal product free, they also offered a list of animal product free products (last time i checked)
Tom's of Maine the famous hygiene product company - i personally don't think their products are that effective (just about everyone i know has had an excellent experience with their products though), except I like the mouthwash, they are quite responsible about telling what is in their products
Pangea Vegan Store a vegan store in the metro-Washington, D.C. area that sells, among other things Vegan Marshmallows
Lightlife Foods these are the guys who invented Tofu Pups (vegetarian/vegan hot dogs) and other meat/flesh substitutes
