Gary Poole continues to monitor the local real ale scene. If you have any news of new (or lost) outlets for real ale please let us know on (01302) 888881.

Real ales noted recently in Conisbrough have been Tetley Bitter at the Station and John Smith's Magnet at the Lord Conyers.

A recent visit to Mexborough revealed that John Smith's Bitter was the only cask beer available at the Ferryboat, the Sportsman and the George & Dragon. This beer was also noted at the Concertina Band Club, where welcome additional interest was on offer in the shape of Club Bitter and Bengal Tiger.

Recent guest beers at the Macintosh Arms in Goole have included Mordue's Workie Ticket, Rudgate Maris Reserve, Acorn Conqueror, Gales HSB and Fuller's ESB.

Greene King Old Speckled Hen has been noted on sale at both the Queen on Sunny Bar (previously keg-only) and at the Lonsdale in Intake.

The ever-popular Glentworth beers continue to be available at the Leopard, together with the regular John Smith's Bitter and Weston's Old Rosie traditional cider. Recent guest beers have included Rudgate Who's Round and Fat Cat Bitter. Beers from the new Thornbridge Brewery in Sheffield have also appeared.

Recent guest beers at the Tut N'Shive in the town centre have included Old Mill Springs Eternal, Bateman's Spring Breeze, Bath Gem Bitter, Cairngorm Trade Winds, Humpty Dumpty Reed Cutter, Nethergate Old Growler, Adnams' Broadside, Badger Best Bitter, Everard's Old Original and Springhead Roaring Meg.

A number of beers from the North Yorkshire Brewery (including Lord Lees, Ruby Ale, Flying Herbert, Dizzy Dick and Northern Star) have been observed at the Salutation. We extend a warm welcome to new licensees John & Yvonne.

The Corner Pin also has a new licensee. The beer range is John Smith's Bitter, Theakston Best Bitter and Fuller's London Pride, together with a guest beer (frequently Charles Wells' Bombardier).

The Corporation Brewery Taps is scheduled for refurbishment in July, and it's rumoured that the pub may regain hand pumped beer.

Brains SA has been recently available at the Goose on Hallgate, whilst across the road at the Hogshead the regular cask beers are Fullers London Pride and Caledonian Deuchar's IPA (the latter at a whopping 5 per pint!).

Old Mill beers on sale at the Brewers Arms in Snaith on the occasion of the presentation of the Winter Pub of the Season award on 12th March were Bitter, Bullion, Old Curiosity, Springs Eternal and Victory (a special beer brewed to celebrate this award).

Out at Fishlake now, where the Old Anchor has been offering Charles Wells' Bombardier and Theakston old Peculier, whilst Marston's Pedigree has been available at the Hare & Hounds.

The recent Beer Festival held at the Eden Grove Sports & Social Club featured no fewer than 17 cask ales (all from independent or micro breweries) and two draught ciders. Amongst the cask beers available were Hawkshead Red, Salopian Icon, Leek Black Grouse, Exmoor Gold, White Horse Wayland Smithy, Highgate Lichfield Frostbite, Beartown Bearskinfull, Rebellion Overdraft and Titanic Set Sale. All proceeds were donated to charity and the event was sponsored by Clark's Brewery of Wakefield. A very commendable initiative indeed.

Clark's No Angel has been noted (at a very reasonable 0 per pint) at the Doncaster Comrades' Club.

The Black Horse at Rawcliffe Bridge will be holding a Beer Festival (featuring over 25 beers from Yorkshire Breweries) over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (27th to 30th May). Further information may be obtained by calling Maurice at the pub on 01405 839019.

The Rod Rest at Hayfield Fishing Lakes on Hayfield Lane is now selling two cask ales. The regular beer is Taylor's Landlord and this will be joined by a guest beer source either from a regional brewery or a local micro-brewery.

Recent guest beers noted in Owston Ferry have been Mauldon's Mole Trap at the White Hart and Badger Best Bitter at the Crooked Billet.

Beers noted on sale at the Alverley in Balby in early March were Everard's Old Original and Brain's St David's Ale. The pub recently held another "mini-beer festival", featuring Hook Norton Old Hooky, Marton's Celebration and Highgate Black Pig.
