Spring 2005

The Salutation

South Parade

The Salutation

In 1780, the Salutation Hotel was built on South Parade, which was then the Great North Road. The facade is more or less the original.

On the 17th January 2005, a new era began in the history of the Salutation Hotel when Jon and Yvonne Ferguson took over the reins. They moved here from the Miners Arms at Garforth and previously to that ran The Londoner in Leeds City Centre, where they served real ales. Jon learned his trade with Grand Metropolitan Retail, who, as I have been told, are very disciplined and strict in their training. After 25 years in the trade, they have now arrived in Doncaster - and for the real ale drinker this can only be a good thing.

I spoke to Jon a week or so after his taking over the Salutation, and he told me his plans for the pub and his intentions for the guest beers. The Tetley Cask would be kept, along with four guest beers which would change regularly. How regularly I couldn't believe, but in next to no time I found that the Salutation had become a permanent beer festival, serving an average of 17 different beers a week (what more could the real ale drinker ask for?). This is the reason I nominated the Salutation for the Spring Pub of the Season award.

On 24th March, the Salutation re-opened after a refurbishment. This included a new plasma screen in the bar, a projection screen upstairs, a new menu and wine list, and most importantly two extra hand pumps. Now, in addition to the regular Tetley's cask, there will be a North Yorkshire Brewery beer, an Oldershaw Brewery beer and four ever changing guest beers.

I hope that all real ale drinkers will support Jon & Yvonne in their venture, wish them all the best for the future, and congratulate them on this award.
