The leather of the Texas Royal WhiteŽ Sheephide, raised by Mr. Bill Hoag of Hermleigh, TX, has been produced and inspected by the Leather Research Institute. We consider this leather to be unique and of an excellent quality, ideal for garments, upholstery and various small leather goods. Ninety nine hides (109 lb. average live animal weight) were examined at three stages: dried, wet blue and natural finished. The average size of these hides was 8.75 square foot, per skin. Thickness variation was 4 to 6 oz. (backbone) and 2.75 to 4 oz. (flank). In general, the leather has a prominent grain surface, especially around the legs and abdomen, giving it character and visual appeal. Along the backbone the grain has a muted tone and is relatively smooth. It is a very versatile leather in this regard. The leather is especially soft, very elastic and has a warm pleasant hand. For the tanner, the hide is mostly blemish-free, has superb hide substance and offers no chemical processing complications. Properly branded and marketed, the Texas Royal WhiteŽ Sheep Leather has a fair market value of between $4 and $8 per sq. ft. Dennis Shelly, Director
