Train Symbol Explanations

TRAIN SYMBOLS

  • SENE/NESE- Selkirk NY to Portland ME ( and vice versa) is one of the Guilford/Conrail Haulage trains. Rather than haul this traffic over their own railroad, Guilford pays Conrail to move it on the Boston Line. Conrail crews run from Selkirk to Worcester; Guilford crews take over the trains at Shay ( next to the Norton Abrasives plant). Conrail power moves the train until it meets NESE where they swap power and the CR units return on the westbound run ( this is usually in Ayer, but not always). SENE usually runs through in the evening.
  • SELA/LASE- The other Guilford/Conrail Haulage train, this one runs from Selkirk NY to Lawrence MA. Crew divisions are the same as with SENE, but the power runs to Lawrence and then returns to Worcester on LASE. SELA usually runs through Ayer in the morning, 9:00 am or so.
  • PODH/DHPO- These are the Portland ME to Mohawk Yard (on the Delaware and Hudson RR) runs and are the last reminders of Guilford's former partnership with the D&H ( lucky them). In the early 90's these trains were noted for their run-through power off the D&H, they no longer see anything but Guilford power. These trains re-crew in Fitchburg MA and run through Ayer in the morning.
  • TV96/95- This is the new piggyback train that Conrail and Guilford runs, primarily for JB Hunt. Guilford crews run from Waterville ME to Ayer; Conrail crews take over in Ayer and bring the train to Worcester MA. At Worcester, they dropped the westbound cars for one of CR's early evening TV jobs to forward them. They then bring any eastbound cars back up to Ayer. Power for this run is all Guilford's, usually MEC SD40's.
  • LAED/EDLA- Lawrence MA to East Deerfield Yard. LAED moves cars from SENE and SELA for Nashua NH, Ayer, and Fitchburg MA. It also move cars for the Providence and Worcester via Gardner MA. EDLA also does the P&W thing, as well as bringing CR empties back to Lawrence for LASE to forward to Conrail. These trains run in the late afternoon to early evening; it's not uncommon for them to meet in Ayer.
  • UB/Bow NH coal trains- These are unit coal trains for the Public Service coal fired power plant in Bow NH. These jobs run over the old B&M west end from the interchange at Rotterdam Jct on the Conrail Selkirk Branch. Power is six axle CR stuff, anything from C30-7A's to SD70M's and everything in between. Once in a while they slip in some foreign power too. Frequency ranges from 2 times a week in the summer to as many as 4-5 a week in the winter months.
  • ML438/439- These are Conrail trackage rights trains that run Autoracks for the Ford unloding facility in Ayer. Conrail crews and power all the way, they usually aren't apparent to the rail fan as they rarely go all the way to the east end of the Hill yard.
