What Exactly is a
Doula?
The
word, "doula," comes from the Greek word for the most important female
slave or servant in an ancient Greek household, the woman who probably
helped the lady of the house through her childbearing. The word has
come to refer to "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides
continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother
before, during and just after childbirth." (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus,
Mothering the Mother) It is the role of the Doula to mentor the mother
and to help her learn as much about her pregnancy and birth as
possible. The Doula should be someone that the mother can trust to help
her make her birth wishes known and to help support her in carrying out
those wishes. The Doula is there to give emotional and physical support
during labor. She helps the mother with her relaxation breathing and
focusing exercises during labor and to reinforce her knowledge that she
is doing a good job. Doulas see the birthing experience as a natural
process that the mother will remember throughout her entire life. This
experience should as pleasurable and rewarding as possible. The
birthing experience is the mothers and we believe you have the right to
design it around your wishes and your beliefs. We are there to help you
in obtaining success with these goals.
