Otis and Muriel
Our Otis was a certified Therapy Dog. He voluntered (with his human teammate) at a large metro rehabilitation hospital, working with stroke victims and orthopedic surgery patients.
Otis invited and encouraged severely injured patients (from a non-medical standpoint) to positively respond to the unconditional love of a Pug, thus offering seriously ill people some extra "miles" on the road toward their personal recovery.
Physicians are learning that animals can be a tremendous aid to mental and physical recovery from catastrophic trauma.
See Otis on Page 61 of Pugs Magazine, along with an article about Pugs as therapy dogs we were interviewed for.
Otis also played a part in comforting some of the victims of the Oklahoma City tornado on May 3,1999,
one of the biggest and most devastating storms recorded on this planet.
His and his human teammate's work are addressed in a new pet therapy book by Kris Butler, "Therapy Dogs Today: Their Gifts, Our Obligation")
Muriel entered our lives as a foster puppy, who we ultimately adopted. She is sightless in one eye, but it doesn't handicap her a bit! She is our inspiration, Otis' Special Buddy, and the logo mascot for Pug Rescue Oklahoma City.
Both Pugs were adopted from the Oklahoma City animal shelter, and have given so much back to the community, not only as excellent ambassadors of their breed, but as living testaments to what animals are capable of; that being, the ability to positively interract with humans, beyond just a "pet" capacity.
You probably hear a lot of people say they have a "therapy dog" these days...but not every family pet is cut out for Pet Therapy work.
It involves training, workshops, professional evaluation, and certification. In other words:
it's about dedicated people with exceptional dogs.
The temperament of the Therapy Dog is hard to describe...he is either "born to the work" or he isn't. Rudimentary obedience training, and a professional evaluation of you and your animal working as a team is what it essentially entails.
The rest is up to your dog having the "Right Stuff".

Pug Rescue (And Your Role)
We have rescued Pugs since 1996, and own and operate a not-for-profit organization, Pug Rescue Oklahoma City.
It is extremely satisfying and joyful work, taking in a homeless, sick, or lost Pug, either returning it to it's owner, or re-placing it into a loving and appropriate "for life" home. We transport, spay/neuter,inoculate, and take care of any other health/emotional needs each individual Pug may have, before letting them go to their new, pre-screened owners.
We invite you to share in this joy, by adopting a rescued Pug, or by volunteering to help!
Our motto:"Saving the World...One Pug At A Time."
Whatever your breed/species preference,
please consider one from a rescue organization or your local shelter. These animals need you, and make the most wonderful, faithful companions with a lifetime of unconditional love to offer you. If you need to relinquish a pet...please bear in mind that there is a rescue for almost every breed of dog and cat, as well as rabbits and other domestic pets. Please, never take a pet, under any circumstaces, to a "kill shelter" (one that may legally destroy your pet the moment you relinquish it)...they are already overloaded with unwanted pets, and the chances of yours being euthanized are simply too great to risk. Your pet thinks he is going to be with you for it's entire life...he will not understand why you sent him away. So please, if you must give up a pet, consider making a traumatic permanent separation as easy as possible for that animal. Thank you! (-:
Most important of all:
Please! SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!
One spay/neuter can potentially prevent hundreds of unwanted animals ending up being euthanized.
"Don't Breed and Buy...While Homeless Pets Die."
A side note: The movie "Breakin All Da Rules" features a Pug getting drunk.
We hope everyone and his dog knows that letting your pooch imbibe is NOT amusing, and can be fatal!
