Halo

Ch 20, join, sc in ch, (ch 2, sc in next ch) around. Join with slip st. break thread

Shaping: I recommend Aleene's fabric stiffener You will need a stryofoam cone (I use a 2" tall cone, plastic wrap, a small amount of cotton, and 6 stainless steel pins. You may either place angel in a plastic bag with stiffener, soak, and squeeze out excess, or pin and shape, and with a clean white cloth or sponge, saturate after pinning. I prefer to pin my projects, and then wet them, using a natural sponge.

Wrap mold in plastic wrap. Place skirt over it, and pin, pulling points down. Roll a small amount of cotton in a strip of plastic wrap, thread thru wings. Shape the points of the wings, rounding the wings slightly, and having the center point "centered" on top.
Shape the halo into a circle, using a pin point to pull loops out to points. Lightly moisten head. You do NOT want to soak this, just moisten lightly with stiffener to give it a coat. Let dry thouroughly (usually 8 hours) gently remove from form. Excess stiffener will dry clear, and can be removed with a clean toothbrush. To hang, run a length of elastic cord (silver or gold for ornaments) thru head, to form loop. Place halo over loop, and hot glue into position on head..

"SPIRAL CLOWN

This wonderful crib toy can sit quietly in a corner or hang as a mobile. If
you put him on an elastic to hang, he will bounce up and down when given a
slight tug. Anne Lane's clown is made with red and white yarns, but this
might be a good time to let your imagination run wild. Combine all the
colorful scraps in your yarn baskset and make each one differently.

Materials: Knitting worsted--1 oz. red, 1/2 oz. pink, 1/2 oz. white; red and
black embroidery floss; polyfil stuffing
Hooks: #H and #00

Directions:

Arms and Legs: Make 2. With red and H hook, ch 82.
Rnd. 1: 2 dc in 3rd-last ch, 3 dc in each remaining ch.
End off.

Head: With pink and 00 hook, ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd-last ch. Do not join rnds--carry a piece of
contrasting-color yarn betwen first and last sc to mark beg. of rnds.
Rnd 2: Inc in each sc around (12 sc)
Rnds 3-5: Working in sc, inc 6 sc evenly spaced in each rnd (30 sc on rnd 5)
Rnds 6-11: Work even on 30 sc
Rnds 12-14: Continuing to work in sc, dec 6 sc evenly spaced in each rnd (12
sc on rnd 14). Stuff head firmly before opening becomes too small.
Rnd 15: Dec 6 sc evenly spaced around (6 sc). End off, leaving a 12-inch
length of yarn for sewing

Body Half: Make 2. With red and H hook, ch 11.
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd-last ch and in each remaining ch (10 sc). Ch 1 and turn
Rows 2-12: Work even on 10 sc. Ch 1 and turn at end of each row. End off
at end of row 12.

Neck Ruffle: With white yarn and H hook, ch 15.
Rnd 1: 2 dc in 3rd-last ch, 3 dc in each remaining ch.
End off, leaving 12-inch length of yarn for sewing.

Hat: With red and 00 hook, ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd-last ch. Do not join rnds--mark as for head.
Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Work even on number of sc in previous rnd.
Rnd 3: Inc in each sc around (12 sc)
Rnd 5: *1 sc in 1st sc, inc in next sc. Repeat from * around (18 sc)
Rnd 7: *1 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, inc in next sc. Rep from * around (24 sc)
Rnd 9: *1 sc in each of 1st 3 sc, inc in next sc. Rep from * around (30 sc)
Rnd 10: Work even on 30 sc. End off red yarn and join white yarn.
Rnd 11: (Work in back lps only) 3 dc in each sc around, join with a sl st.
End off, leaving 12-inch length of yarn for sewing.

Finish:
Twist arms and legs spirals until curled and sew together at 8th spiral.
These first 8 spirals form arms, the longer spirals are legs.
Sew head firmly to arms and legs at joining point. Next sew body half
p0ieces together with several overcast stitches at middle of bottom edges.
Sllip over legs and up to neck. Sew shoulder seams. Sew side seams from
bottom to underarms.
Place neck ruffle around neck. Sew ends together and sew neck ruffle to
bottom of head. Sew hat to top of head.
With black embroidery floss, make 2 crossed stitches for eyes. With red
embroidery floss, embroider a nose and a smiling mouth.
If you want a jingly clown, add small bells to the ends
of arms and legs"

NOTE for the 1990's: Re: current baby/crib safety guidelines, I would not
attach little bells to the arms and legs where they could be bitten off
(maybe put them inside the body instead). Also, if attaching with elastic, I
would keep the elastic really short so it couldn't get wound around any body
parts. Would probably also be a good idea to wash the clown in baby laundry
soap before giving.
