SANDELL Drive-In Theatre, Clarendon, Tx. SANDELL Drive-In Theatre, Clarendon, Tx.

Located on Highway 70 North of Highway 287 on the West side of Clarendon.

Phone number: (806)874-0685

Their Grand Opening was over Labor Day weekend.

This was a reply to my question about how the grand opening went.

"Yes, the drive-in opened and had a tremendous weekend run over the Labor Day weekend. As a special opening, we ran "Signs" double featured with "Joshua". We do have a phone number for the drive-in; it is (806)874-0685. This coming weekend, John says he will be showing "Men In Black II" doubled with "Spiderman".

There is a lot of enthusiasm for the drive-in in Clarendon and with the students at the local college. About 287 people paid attendance the opening night, and an average of 175 for each of the other 3 nights, I think. At one point, we thought we had much much more there, but that was due to several mistakes in interpreting the numbering scheme of the tickets. A hard hand count of the torn halves of the tickets gave us the correct count, and an examination of the numbering scheme on those tickets gave a good double-check. The email address for the Sandell is Sandell@amaonline.com Of course, you can also email me too. Regards, Danny Morrow"

Recent emails anounced the Sandell's reopening.

Just a note to let you know that my brother will be reopening the Sandell Drive-In in Clarendon, TX. You have pictures of it on your website (not quite how it looks today -- yours is a good picture nonetheless of how it looked just a few months ago). I've been helping my brother some. His target date for reopening is August 24th, but it might have to be delayed some from that date in his heart. (It's a lot of work!).

I got this email on 8/19/2002.

"Debbie & Sam

Gary doesn't get around too good these days and his eyes are pretty bad. He sold the drivein the middle of June to my brother, John Earl Morrow and his silent partner. Gary Barnhill talks to my brother and me without holding back much anything we want to know about the drivein, and not necessarily just about the history of it, however. He's probably being quiet and coy with others, as he is excited and wanting to see the drivein get back in operation again. He's a tremendous guy, and if you get the chance to visit with him, he'll love talking to you, I'm sure.

My brother and I are working very very hard to get the theatre operational again somewhere around the end of this month. There is a lot of work involved with this, so we are very busy these last few days before the Light shines again on Sandell hill in Clarendon! And, of course, you are more than welcome to come see us in Clarendon anytime.

Danny Morrow"

Here is another story in the Amarillo Globe-News newspaper.

As he mentioned in his email the Sandell probably looks better now but this is the only photo that I have. I hope to add some new ones soon.

My thanks to Jay Strickland, email, for giving me this photo.

He is an insurance agent in Grand Prairie, Tx.. He is a good friend to give me photos of drive-ins he sees while traveling.

He told me he did not go up close but all he saw was high weeds in the lot.

Here's a satellite image of it, at Terraserver where it's distinctive "sandal footprint in the sand" outline can be seen clearly. Highway 70 is to the left of it, and Hwy 287 angles NW -to- SE through Clarendon below the drivein in this image.
