Joseph was a steam engineer. He also studied law but did not receive a law degree. Joseph worked for Minors Lumber Co., Glendale, CA, on the steam engines used in the lumber mill. After moving to Taft, CA, he worked on oil pumps and boiler houses at the Minors Co. Parafin Lease. Joseph invented an oil separator for removing oil from water; the invention eventually was used by a milk company to separate the cream from milk.
