Past National President Soror Hortense Cannady chartered Potomac Valley Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on April 27, 1985 with 28 members. Soror Joyce
Gates Mitchell served as the chapter's first president. Since that time PVAC has developed
innovative programs to provide services and programs to promote human welfare in the areas
of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement,
Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement throughout the
northern and western parts of Montgomery County, Maryland. Activities in these areas
involve Delta members as volunteers in direct services, catalysts for community action,
recruiters of inter-agency support for issues, leaders in networking and coalition
building with other organizations, and sources and resources for the securing and
dissemination of information. The Sorors of Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter in
partnership with the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County mentor girles
between 11 - 17 years of age that reside in the Middlebrook Square Community in
Germantown, Maryland, The Delta Diamond Youth Group. In October 1998, the Delta
Diamond Youth Group transitioned into the Delta Academy which is a National
Signature Program. The mentors provide a support system and positive roles
models that focus on sisterhood, scholarship in the areas of math, science, and
technology, and services. The chapter also supports the Montgomery County Branch of
the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund and the National Council of Negro Women.
To facilitate fund raising the chapter established a 501 (c) (3) organization
which qualifies for tax deductible contributions, PVAC Fund. The PVAC Fund has held
silent and live auctions at the New Zealand Embassy, German Embassy, and the Embassy of
South Africa. The proceeds from the Auctions are used solely for the scholarship
program.
The Chapter's major fund raising event in an Annual Card Party held every October.
The Card Party/Casino Night supports the chapter's ongoing programs.
