The 1790 Federal Census

Title 4 lists towns with page numbers
The new United States government mandated that states count and record the population its citizens via the 1790 federal census. Connecticut was included since it was
one of the original states and federal marshals were appointed to take the census. Census day was August 2, 1790 and the number of individuals in a household was
recorded based on who was living at a residence on that day. The census taker had nine months to complete the census, so if he came in November, the data was based
on the August 2nd household count. The census includes a count for males over age 16, under age 16, all females counted together, other free people and slaves. The
only name listed is the head of the household, usually a male, and occasionally a female. Other free people are described as Negroe, some have just first names, others
a surname. In Branford and North Branford there were 31 households with slaves totalling 50 individuals. The original census gives the total number of people in a household
but the index does not. Each page has subtotals and totals for each column.
Entries for each column are usually presented in the literature as follows, for example:
Ephraim Beach 3-1-2-0-1 (meaning 3 males under 16, 1 male over 16, 2 females, zero
other free people, 1 slave)
Sometimes the last two columns for other free people and slaves are left off instead of having two zeros.
There is no record which day or days the census taker came to Branford or who the census taker was. There is always a possibility that some households were skipped
or individual counts incorrect. Often the census taker was a local person of some prominence and so familiar with the people in town, especially Branford which was
relatively small. North Branford and Northford are included in the Branford census. It can be concluded that there was only one census taker for Branford since the
handwriting is the same throughout.
For many years, copies of the census have been available on microfilm at libraries, National Archive branches and through library loan. In the year 2000, scanned copies
of the microfilm became available on CD-ROM making viewing at home a possibility. The Branford census is quite difficult to read and interpret due to the handwriting and
spelling of the time. The numbers in the columns are clearly written with few extraneous marks.
The census bureau printed an index to the 1790 census in 1908 for each town. These indexes are widely available at many libraries. These indexes are also becoming
available online.
The attached data is my interpretation of the Branford 1790 federal census. Anyone researching their family history should
look at the microfilm or CD-ROM to verify the data.
Only a few errors were found comparing the original data with the index. Four names are missing from the 1908 index:

Josiah Frisbie 1-1-4
Benjamin Howd 1-4-4
Ebenezer Tyler 1-1-3
At the end of page 187, the total for slaves from that page says 18, yet the column only adds up
to 14. That incorrect total gets carried throughout the census making the total number of slaves in Branford 50, not 54.
The genealogical data presented here is based on many years of research of Branford's early families including data
from vital, church, burial and land records. Sometimes identification of a person is based on their proximity to other relatives in the census.
Some conclusions can be made on the route the census taker took based on knowledge of Branford's families and neighborhoods. The census taker probably took several
days to complete the census in Branford and he may not have taken a contiguous route. Current addresses are also used to help in identification
of houses.
