Ed is my dad and this is my opportunity to brag about him to the whole world. I think it was about time the rest of the world knows more about the man who is already famous amoung West Coast carvers!

Ed is a big man with an even bigger heart, and an always ready laugh that is almost as famous as his decoys! Ed Has been waterfowling and carving since he could lift a gun and wield a knife. He was an expert carver and painter at age 13, when he was carving for "shell money". He would carve and sell by the dozen back then, not realizing that he was setting the standards for west coast carvers in the years to follow.

At 70 years old, Ed has more energy than a teenager, hunting, fishing and carving almost every day. He is a true sportsman with an unequaled love of the outdoors.

Ed is a member and donor to Ducks Unlimited and California Waterfowl Association. He is also a member of many carving and decoy associations, such as the "Pacific Flyway Decoy Association", where he has won countless best of show and first place awards. He has been featured in many newspapers, like the Sacramento Bee, and in books, such as Wildfowl Decoys of the Pacific Coast. Ed also recently received a "Certificate of Recognition" from the California State Senate for 50 years of waterfowl carving.

His decoy customers have ranged from friends (and he has alot) to senators and movie stars. Some buy just to enjoy the artistry, some for the investment, and believe it or not, some buy to shoot over! Decoy carving is a folk art and when Ed goes to "the big duck pond above" (God forbid), his art style goes with him. He has trained an apprentice, Steve Esperson, also of Rio Vista, but each carver developes his own look and style. The value of Ed's decoys will only appreciate with time. But, in my opinion, the value of his decoys lie in the man that made them. If you haven't met Ed, you have missed a great opportunity in life!

Here are pictures of a few of Ed's decoys, just to give you an idea of his artistry, but the photos don't do them justice!

mallard Here is a Drake Mallard, shooting grade.
Here are a nice pair of Pintails, also shooting grade. pair of sprig
pair of canvasbacks This is a pair of Canvasbacks, more on the cross between shooting and decorative side I'd say.
Here's everyone's favorite, the Wood Duck. woody
greenwing teal How about a pair of Green Winged Teal? The keels are on, ready to hunt, and the ducks eat them up!
A collection wouldn't be complete without a pair of Northern Shovelers. spoonbills/spoonys
wigeon on the sneak Wigeon, sometimes considered "junk ducks", become some of the most beautiful carved and painted ducks! This one was carved "on the sneak"
Here are a beautiful pair of Swans, carved full sized. Pair of full sized swans

These are only a few of Ed's "dekes". He has carved about every duck native to north America, and shore birds to boot.He even carved us some dove decoys to shoot over. Just use your imagination, if you want ducks standing on a log, preening themselves or just ready to shoot over, just ask. Ed really enjoys what he does and it shows in his work.

Al loves to hunt, is fun to hunt with and knows what he is doing. He has great private property leased and is the best duck and goose caller I know.
