a look into the grimy -- & relatively fictitious -- streets
of Law and Order's New York City

By Karina Santos

INTRODUCTION

The following is a compilation of addresses from the television series, Law and Order. Most of the addresses were culled from the show's placard graphics, as well as from character dialogue and scripts; the actual locations were provided by those funky L+O production people and other digest members who happened to recognise a familiar place (the phone book helped too).

The guide is divided into New York City neighbourhoods, but because many of the address numbers don't correspond, I did a judgement call and placed locations to where the particular episode seemed to indicate--as Det.Greevey pointed out in By Hooker, By Crook, if one was to go to a particular address, (s)he'd end up in the middle of the East River. There are lots of those sort of addresses in here--the East River's crowded enough as it is.

There are a handful of episodes missing; a considerable amount of apathy/atrophy/entropy has befallen me and several dozen unlabelled videotapes....I promise I'll get to them...um, *soon.* There are also several maps forthcoming and a quick time movie or two.... If anyone has any additions, corrections (especially character names!!!) , verifications and suggestions, please e-mail me at tallulahg@aol.com--all are welcome and you will be gratefully acknowledged.

OVERVIEW

First, here's a brief rundown of New York City's neighbourhoods:

The City is comprised of five boroughs: the central island of Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Because Law and Order is based mainly in Manhattan, the guide focuses on this borough.

Manhattan is divided into three main parts: Upper Manhattan, Midtown Mahattan, and Lower Manhattan. Upper Manhattan begins above 57th Street, with Central Park set in between the East and West sides. The Upper East Side is mostly a residential area, with Yorkville being an old German neighbourhood. The Upper West Side is less refined, and it too is predominantly residential--well heeled on the southern edge but considerably less so as you move north. At the top of the Upper West Side is Morningside Heights, an area that is the last gasp of wealth before Harlem, Washington Heights, Hamilton Heights; further east is Harlem's Latino counterpart, El Barrio. Further north is Inwood, which starts above Dyckman Street.

Midtown Manhattan in many ways is the city's centre. Cutting through the heart of it is Fifth Avenue, with the theatre strip of Broadway and the surrounding theatre district just to the west, along with Times Square and the Garment District. Among the more residential neighbourhoods are Chelsea, Clinton (!)--aka Hell's Kitchen--and to the east, Murray Hill, Sutton and Gramercy.

Below 14th Street is Lower Manhattan, the oldest part of the island. It contains New York's Financial District, near the harbour; to the north are the municipal buildings of the Civic Centre which form a prelude to the increasingly gentrified TriBeCa and SoHo areas. Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, the East Village, and the Lower East Side are other neighbourhoods in the area.
