Eastwind Consort

The combination of flute, clarinet and bassoon, a unique woodwind
ensemble, has repertoire dating back to the Classical period.
Parisian composers in the early twentieth century particularly
to the genre; Americans and composers from other countries
contributed thereafter. Works adapted from other instrumentations
complement the existing trio repertoire.

Eastwind Consort, a well-established Washington, D.C. trio, has
performed to critical acclaim throughout the Washington metropolitan
area, including radio broadcast and sold-out live concert appearances.

The members of Eastwind Consort are Sara Stern ("Made one want to cheer!";
-New York Times), solo flutist with the 20th Century Consort, James Bryla
("Bryla had it all; faultless intonation, superior musicianship and virtuosic technique."
- The Washington Post), winner of numerous solo clarinet competitions, including
the National Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition, and bassoonist
Eric Dircksen ("deftly and briskly passed over arpeggios" - The Washington Post),
participant in music festivals in the United States and abroad, including Aspen and Spoleto.

Critical Reviews

"The ensemble performed superbly … an effective esprit de corps" - Bob Waters, The Washington Post, April 26, 1993

"… bright, festive lines played with fluency and a sense of pure joy." - Joseph McLellan, The Washington Post, November 9, 1995

"Walter Ross' Sonatina [was] dispatched with pinpoint accuracy by Eastwind Consort members Sara Stern and Eric Dircksen … James Bryla lavished golden tone and a pensive beauty on this dry, scattershot little work [John Stephens' Inventions for Clarinet], and made light of its technical difficulties." - Joe Banno, The Washington Post, September 30, 1997

"such sensibly gauged phrasing, such a relaxed sense of musical conversation... clarity, concentration and handsome tone" - Joe Banno, The Washington Post, July 11, 2003
