Welcome,
fellow Maynard fan! I hope you've enjoyed these pages so far, and now I'm going
to give you my MF history in 25 words or less (well, almost).
I
was 12 years old when I first saw the album in my dad's record collection: MF
Horn 4 & 5, Live at Jimmy's. "Who's this?" I asked. "That," he said, pausing
for effect, "is the greatest trumpet player in the world." I was hooked immediately
(it's a great album), and I'm a huge fan to this day. Maynard's an inspiration
both for his incredible ability and the joy that he brings to his life
and his playing. How can you not dig a guy who's crazy about what he does?
This
is me
at my second Maynard concert, proudly wearing the first of many MF t-shirts. (My
kids wear them for PJ's now.)
We
used to catch Maynard at a place called The Prom Center
in St. Paul. They tore it down some years ago, but ask any Maynard fan in the
Midwest and they'll tell you: It was a magical place to catch the man in concert!
Here's the ad we would look for in the Sunday paper. "At Long Last" is right!
I've
collected many albums over the years, so I suppose you'd like to see the
list. I also have a picture of my albums on display
at a 1996 Maynard concert. If you've ever seen Matt
Keller's Maynard page, he's got a smaller version of this same photo there.
While
we're talking about links, there's Matt
Keller's wonderful site, one by Japan's Super-Fan, Yutaka
Tsutsumi, and another one by Ron
Schaeffer. Former MF trumpeter Stan Mark had a page on AOL, but I'll have
to get back to you with that link.
Let
me go on the record and state that I'm in awe of all of these fine pages, and
that I'm merely trying to provide a few more tidbits here for the serious Maynard
fan. These pages may grow, but they'll never overshadow the outstanding efforts
of the folks listed above. Hats off to you all!
