Students do not have to be APICS members!
The eligible college student categories are:
- Undergraduate part-time
- Undergraduate full time
- Graduate part-time
- Graduate full-time
Free applications for the contest can be obtained from APICS at 1-800-444-2742 by requesting item #01002 and ask APICS for the APICS Chapter nearest you for paper submission (APICS should be able to give you the names and phone numbers of your local Chapter officers). Normally papers are submitted to the local chapters for judging by April or May, then the winners at the chapter level are submitted to the region level. All chapter winning papers in Region IX must be submitted to me no later than June 15, 1997. It may be helpful to see the 1996 International grand prize winner's paper which should be in the APICS P&IM Journal for the First Quarter of 1997 and we'll try to get it on the web if possible.
Concept for this Update
Remanufacturing
- An industrial process in which worn-out products are restored to like-new condition. In contrast, a repaired or rebuilt product normally retains its identity, and only those parts that have failed or are badly worn are replaced or serviced. (APICS 8th Edition Dictionary definition). Now let's take this concept a little further. Remanufacturing is a rapidly expanding field of interest as it is an Earth friendly alternative to recycling and disposal. The concept is now recognized to cover items restored to as new or even better than original condition and use without having to resort to breakdown into every individual part. The concepts of remanufacturing and repair are beginning to overlap, and perhaps this may even be useful as both emphasize placing more attention on reuse of products instead of discarding them and using more resources to replace them. Many traditional manufacturers are beginning to take an active roll in product life cycle management and are initiating remanufacturing efforts. We will expand further on this important and growing area in future updates.
A Fully Functional Strategic Planning System
Due to continued interest from students and faculty members, this site is still referenced here for others to access. The Department of Defense commissioned the development of a strategic planning tool which is now available on the Web as a free application. It includes an extensive tutorial, model plan and provides step by step support to develop a strategic plan. Check out TurboBPR for strategic planning and you will also find the path to other business process reengineering tools.
Contacts Information
We encourage you to provide us with your name, educational or organizational affiliation and EMAIL address. We will organize a Web page at this site of interested participants. Meanwhile you can reach us by sending a message to Edubridge@aol.com. We want your feedback on what you would like to see in future site updates.
APICS Certification Programs
There are two programs: Certification in Resource Management (CIRM) and Certification in Production & Inventory Management CPIM). These programs are continuously being improved and new materials are rolling off the press in 1997 and 1998. These certifications are open to anyone, regardless of educational status. Students may find an edge in job interviews with knowledge of terms being used today in world class organizations by studying this material.
APICS Events
The next APICS Region IX event will be held in Secaucus, New Jersey at the Meadowlands Hilton Hotel. It will be a combined meeting of the Region II and Region IX Chapters. Student Chapter members are encouraged to attend and may want to call Karen Hoffman in the Buffalo APICS Student Chapter for more details at 716-731-7276. This event will run from Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8, 1997. Hotel arrangements can be made by calling 201-348-6900. Call your Region Representative for meeting reservations.
Interesting Web sites and Programs
Are you interested in writing your own web page? Visit the home Web site of Todd Stauffer, author of Creating Your Own America Online Web Pages. His book is easy to read and comes with a nifty CD that has graphics, sounds, videoclips, photos etc some of which you may see or hear in the future at this site. We'll jazz this site up with photos, sounds and other GUI ideas in future updates, but we'll also use these approaches sparingly to respect your access time.
