I have not completely figured out what went wrong, but the total damage
included three broken connecting rods, broken camshaft, cracked block,
shattered lifter, bent pushrod, bent valve, huge holes in the oil pan, and
a lot of very small parts in the oil pan.
| After removing the intake, I found the first hint of serious damage.
One pushrod was punched through the middle of a lifter. The lifter turned
out to be totally shattered below the lifter galley. I found one other
bent pushrod. |

As I removed the engine, I could start to see the start of the injuries.
From this side two of the rods had punched holes in the oil pan. The side
of one rod is visible. |
| One other observation was the camshaft had broken into three
pieces. The rear cam freeze plug had been punched out. I took this
picture after removing the engine. Notice how the lifter is touching
a mangled connecting rod. |

After serious effort to remove the oil pan, here is what I found.
The force of the two broken rods were enough to bend the steel
engine girdle. |
