Toronto celebrated the 17th World Youth Day, and in our summer issue, we are reprinting the speeches delivered by our Holy Father during his visit between July 23 and 28. The theme of our quarterly e-zine is taken from Matthew 5:13-16, and this was the main theme which the Pope inculcated on the youth who assisted this week of activities. We are also including here links of the Pope's visit as well as comments on his visit.

Queridos Amigos canadienses:
1. Estoy profundamente agradecido por sus palabras de bienvenida, Sr. Primer Ministro, y siento un gran honor por la presencia del Premier de Ontario, del Alcalde de la gran ciudad de Toronto y de otros representantes distinguidos del gobierno y de la sociedad civil. A todos os digo un caluroso "gracias" por acoger la idea de ser sede de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en Canadá y por todo lo que se ha hecho para que se hiciera realidad. Querido pueblo de Canadá: tengo recuerdos vívidos de mi primera visita apostólica en el año 1984, y de mi breve visita en 1987 a las Primeras Naciones en la tierra de Denendeh. Esta vez me tengo que contentar con sólo quedarme en Toronto. Desde aquí, saludo a todos los canadienses. Vosotros estáis en mis oraciones de acción de gracias a Dios, que ha bendecido tan abundantemente vuestro hermoso y vasto país.
2. Jóvenes de todos los rincones del mundo se están reuniendo para celebrar la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Con sus dones de inteligencia y de corazón, representan el futuro del mundo. Pero también cargan con las marcas de una humanidad que con demasiada frecuencia no conoce la paz, ni la justicia. Demasiadas vidas comienzan y terminan sin alegría, sin esperanza. Esa es una de las principales razones para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Los jóvenes se están reuniendo para comprometerse, por medio de la fuerza de su fe en Jesucristo, con la gran causa de la paz y solidaridad humana. Toronto, ¡gracias!; Canadá, ¡gracias por darles la bienvenida con brazos abiertos!
3. En la versión en francés de vuestro himno nacional, "O Canada", vosotros cantáis: "Car ton bras sait porter l’épée, il sait porter la croix...” (Porque tu brazo sabe portar la espada, sabe portar la cruz). Los canadienses son herederos de un humanismo extraordinariamente rico, enriquecido aun más por la mezcla de muchos elementos culturales diferentes. Pero el núcleo de vuestra herencia es la visión espiritual y trascendente de la vida basada en la revelación cristiana que le dio un impulso vital a vuestro desarrollo como una sociedad libre, democrática y solidaria, reconocida en el mundo entero como campeona en derechos humanos y dignidad humana.
4. En un mundo de grandes tensiones sociales y éticas, y confusión sobre el sentido mismo de la vida, los canadienses tienen un tesoro incomparable para dar como contribución, siempre y cuando preserven lo que es profundo, bueno y válido de su propia herencia. Oro para que la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud ofrezca a todos los canadienses una oportunidad para recordar los valores esenciales al buen vivir y a la felicidad humana. Dear Prime Minister Chrétien,
Dear Canadian Friends,
1. I am deeply grateful for your words of welcome, Mr. Prime Minister, and feel greatly honoured by the presence here of the Premier of Ontario, the Mayor of the great city of Toronto, and other distinguished representatives of government and civil society. To all I say a resounding “thank you” for welcoming the idea of holding the World Youth Day in Canada and for all that has been done to make it a reality.
Dear People of Canada, I have vivid memories of my first apostolic visit in 1984, and of my brief visit in 1987 to the First Nations in the land of Denendeh. This time I must be content to stay only in Toronto. From here I greet all Canadians. You are in my thankful prayers to God, who has so abundantly blessed your vast and beautiful country.
2. Young people from all parts of the world are gathering for the World Youth Day. With their gifts of intelligence and heart they represent the future of the world. But they also bear the marks of a humanity that too often does not know peace, or justice.
Too many lives begin and end without joy, without hope. That is one of the principal reasons for the World Youth Day. Young people are coming together to commit themselves, in the strength of their faith in Jesus Christ, to the great cause of peace and human solidarity.
Thank you, Toronto; thank you, Canada, for welcoming them with open arms!
3. In the French version of your national anthem, “O Canada”, you sing: “Car ton bras sait porter l’épée, il sait porter la croix. . .” Canadians are heirs to an extraordinarily rich humanism, enriched even more by the blend of many different cultural elements. But the core of your heritage is the spiritual and transcendent vision of life based on Christian revelation which gave vital impetus to your development as a free, democratic and caring society, recognized throughout the world as a champion of human rights and human dignity.
4. In a world of great social and ethical strains, and confusion about the very purpose of life, Canadians have an incomparable treasure to contribute – on condition that they preserve what is deep, and good and valid in their own heritage. I pray that the World Youth Day will offer all Canadians an opportunity to remember the values that are essential to good living and to human happiness.
Mr. Prime Minister, dear Friends: may the motto of the World Youth Day echo throughout the land, reminding all Christians to be “salt of the earth and light of the world”.

¡Queridos jóvenes amigos!
Habéis venido a Toronto desde cada continente para celebrar la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Mis saludos jubilosos y cordiales estén con todos vosotros! He estado esperando impacientemente esta reunión, especialmente cuando día tras día de todas partes del mundo recibía en el Vaticano las buenas nuevas acerca de todas las iniciativas que han marcado vuestro viaje hasta aquí. Y a menudo, aun sin haberos conocido, os encomendé a cada uno de vosotros en mis oraciones al Señor. Él siempre os ha conocido y Él ama a cada uno de vosotros personalmente. Con fraternal afecto saludo a los Cardenales y Obispos que están aquí con vosotros; en particular el Obispo Jacques Berthelet, Presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Canadá, el Cardenal Aloysius Ambrozic, Arzobispo de esta ciudad, y el Cardenal James Francis Stafford, Presidente del Consejo Pontificio para los Laicos. A todos vosotros os digo: que los contactos con vuestros Pastores os ayuden a descubrir y apreciar más y más la belleza de la Iglesia, experimentada como comunión misionera.
2. Escuchando la gran lista de países de los cuales venís, hemos hecho prácticamente un viaje alrededor del mundo. En cada uno de vosotros he vislumbrado los rostros de todos vuestros jóvenes compañeros que he conocido en el curso de mis viajes apostólicos y a los cuales en una manera vosotros representáis aquí. Os he imaginado en un viaje, caminando en la sombra de la Cruz del Jubileo, en esta gran peregrinación de jóvenes que, trasladándose de continente a continente, está ansiosa por sostener al mundo entero en un cercano abrazo de fe y esperanza. Hoy esta peregrinación hace una parada aquí, en las riberas del Lago Ontario. Se nos recuerda de otro lago, el Lago de Tiberíades, en cuyas riberas Jesús hizo una fascinante propuesta a sus primeros discípulos, algunos de los cuales probablemente eran jóvenes como vosotros (cf. Jn 1, 35-42). El Papa, quien los ama mucho, ha venido desde lejos para escuchar nuevamente con vosotros las palabras de Jesús. Tal como fue el caso de sus discípulos en aquel día hace mucho tiempo, estas palabras pueden encender una llama en el corazón de los jóvenes y motivar toda su vida. Os invito entonces a hacer las diversas actividades de esta Jornada Mundial de la Juventud que está apenas empezando un momento especial cuando cada uno de vosotros escucháis atentamente al Señor, con un corazón generoso y dispuesto, con la finalidad de llegar a ser “sal de la tierra y luz del mundo” (cf. Mt 5, 13-16).
Discurso del Santo Padre
¡Queridos jóvenes!
1. Lo que recién hemos escuchado es la Carta Magna del Cristianismo: las Bienaventuranzas. Hemos visto una vez más, con los ojos del corazón, lo que sucedió en ese momento. Una multitud de personas está reunida alrededor de Jesús en la montaña: mujeres y hombres, jóvenes y ancianos, sanos y enfermos, que han venido de Galilea, pero también de Jerusalén, de Judea, de las ciudades de Decápolis, de Tiro y Sidón. Todos ellos ansiosamente esperaban una palabra, un gesto que les diera consuelo y esperanza. Nosotros también estamos aquí reunidos, esta tarde, para escuchar con atención al Señor. Él os mira con afecto: vosotros venís de diferentes regiones de Canadá, de los Estados Unidos, de América Central y de América del Sur, de Europa, de África, de Asia, de Oceanía. He oído vuestras voces alegres, vuestros gritos, vuestras canciones, y he sentido el profundo anhelo que late en vuestros corazones: ¡vosotros queréis ser feliz! Queridos jóvenes, muchas y tentadoras son las voces que os llaman de todos lados: muchas de estas voces os hablan de una alegría que puede obtenerse con dinero, con éxito, con poder. Principalmente, proponen una alegría que viene con el placer superficial y efímero de los sentidos.
2. Queridos jóvenes: el Papa de edad, con muchos años pero aún joven de corazón, da respuesta a vuestro deseo joven de felicidad con palabras que no son suyas. Son palabras que resonaron hace dos mil años. Palabras que hemos escuchado nuevamente esta tarde: "Bienaventurados...". La palabra clave en la enseñanza de Jesús es una proclamación de júbilo: "Bienaventurados...". Fuimos creados para ser felices. Entonces con razón, tenéis sed de felicidad. Cristo tiene la respuesta a vuestro deseo. Pero él os pide que confiéis en él. La verdadera alegría es una victoria, algo que no puede obtenerse sin una larga y difícil lucha. Cristo tiene el secreto de esta victoria. Vosotros conocéis qué pasó antes. Está contado en el Libro del Génesis: Dios creó al hombre y a la mujer en un paraíso, el Edén, porque Él quería que fueran felices. Desafortunadamente, el pecado arruinó Sus planes iniciales. Pero Dios no se resignó a este fracaso. Él envió a su Hijo al mundo para devolvernos una idea aun más hermosa del cielo. Dios se hizo hombre -según nos dicen los Padres de la Iglesia- para que los hombres y las mujeres puedan convertirse en Dios. Éste es el punto decisivo, realizado en la historia humana por medio de la Encarnación.
3. ¿Sobre qué lucha estamos hablando? Cristo mismo nos da la respuesta: San Pablo escribió: "Jesús, siendo de condición divina, no codició el ser igual a Dios sino que se despojó de sí mismo tomando condición de esclavo... se rebajó a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte" (Flp 2,6-8). Fue una lucha hasta la muerte. Cristo no peleó esta batalla para sí mismo sino para nosotros. A partir de su muerte, surgió la vida. La tumba en el Calvario se ha convertido en la cuna de la nueva humanidad en su viaje hacia la verdadera felicidad. El "Sermón de la Montaña" delinea el mapa de este viaje. Las ocho Bienaventuranzas son las señales de tránsito que nos indican el camino. Es un camino cuesta arriba, pero Jesús lo ha caminado antes que nosotros. Un día dijo: "el que me siga no caminará en la oscuridad" (Jn 8,12). Y en otro momento agregó: "Os he dicho esto, para que mi gozo esté en vosotros, y vuestro gozo sea colmado." (Jn 15,11). Es caminando con Cristo que podemos encontrar la alegría, ¡la verdadera alegría! Precisamente por esta razón, hoy Jesús nuevamente os repite la proclamación de la alegría: "Bienaventurados...". Ahora que estamos por dar la bienvenida a su gloriosa Cruz, la Cruz que ha acompañado a los jóvenes en los caminos del mundo, dejemos que esta palabra de consuelo y exigente resuene en el silencio de nuestro corazón: "Bienaventurados...".
4. Reunidos alrededor de la Cruz del Señor, miramos a Él como ejemplo: Jesús no se limitó a proclamar las Bienaventuranzas, ¡las vivió! Al mirar su vida de nuevo, al releer el Evangelio, nos maravillamos: el más pobre entre los pobres, el más dócil entre los mansos, la persona con el corazón más limpio y más misericordioso es precisamente Jesús. Las Bienaventuranzas son nada más que la descripción de un rostro, ¡su rostro! Al mismo tiempo, las Bienaventuranzas describen lo que un cristiano debería ser: son el retrato del discípulo de Jesús, la fotografía de quienes han aceptado el Reino de Dios y quieren que su vida esté en sintonía con las exigencias del Evangelio. A estas personas Jesús les habla, llamándolos "bienaventurados". La alegría que las Bienaventuranzas prometen es la misma alegría de Jesús: una alegría buscada y encontrada en la obediencia al Padre y en el regalo de uno mismo al prójimo.
5. ¡Jóvenes de Canadá, de América y del mundo entero!: Al mirar a Jesús, aprenderán lo que significa ser pobres de espíritu, mansos y misericordiosos; lo que significa buscar la justicia, ser limpios de corazón, trabajadores por la paz. Con vuestra mirada fija en él, vosotros descubriréis el sendero del perdón y la reconciliación en un mundo a menudo devastado por la violencia y el terror. El año pasado, vimos con una claridad dramática el rostro trágico de la malicia humana. Vimos lo que sucede cuando el odio, el pecado y la muerte toman control. Pero hoy, la voz de Jesús resuena en medio de nuestro encuentro. Su voz es una voz de vida, de esperanza, de perdón; una voz de justicia y de paz. ¡Escuchemos su voz!
6. Queridos amigos, actualmente la Iglesia os mira con confianza y espera que vosotros sean gente de las Bienaventuranzas. Bienaventurados vosotros si, como Jesús, sois pobres de espíritu, buenos y misericordiosos; si realmente buscáis lo que es justo y recto; si sois puros de corazón, trabajadores por la paz, amantes de los pobres y sus sirvientes. ¡Bienaventurados vosotros! Únicamente Jesús es el verdadero Maestro, sólo Jesús habla del mensaje inalterable que responde a los anhelos más profundos del corazón humano, porque solamente él conoce “qué hay en cada persona” (cf. Jn 2,25). Hoy él os llama para ser la sal y luz del mundo, para escoger la bondad, vivir en la justicia, para convertiros en instrumentos de amor y paz. Su llamada siempre ha exigido una elección entre lo bueno y lo malo, entre la luz y las tinieblas, entre la vida y la muerte. Hoy él hace la misma invitación a vosotros que estáis reunidos aquí en las orillas del Lago Ontario.
7. ¿Qué llamada elegirán seguir los centinelas de la mañana? Creer en Jesús es aceptar lo que él dice, aun cuando sea contrario a lo que otros digan. Significa rechazar la atracción del pecado, a pesar de lo atractivo que pueda ser, con el fin de encaminarnos en el difícil sendero de las virtudes del Evangelio. Jóvenes que me escuchan: ¡contestad al Señor con corazones fuertes y generosos! Él cuenta con vosotros. Nunca olviden: ¡Cristo os necesita para llevar a cabo su plan de salvación! Cristo necesita vuestra juventud y vuestro generoso entusiasmo para hacer resonar su proclamación de alegría en el nuevo milenio. ¡Contestad su llamada poniendo vuestras vidas a su servicio en vuestros hermanos y hermanas! Confiad en Cristo, porque él confía en vosotros.
8. Señor Jesucristo, proclama una vez más las Bianaventuranzas en presencia de estos jóvenes, reunidos en Toronto para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Mira a ellos con amor y escucha sus jóvenes corazones, listos para arriesgar su futuro por ti. Los has llamado a ser “sal de la tierra y luz del mundo”. Continúa enseñándoles la verdad y belleza de la visión que tú proclamaste en la Montaña. ¡Hazlos hombres y mujeres de tus Bienaventuranzas! Permite que la luz de tu sabiduría brille sobre ellos, de manera que en palabra y en obras ellos puedan difundir en el mundo la luz y la sal del Evangelio. ¡Haz toda su vida un reflejo brillante de ti, que eres la verdadera luz que vino a este mundo para que todo el que crea en ti no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna (cf. Jn 3, 16)!

Dear Young Friends!
1. You have come to Toronto from every continent to celebrate World Youth Day. My joyful and heartfelt greetings go to you! I have been eagerly looking forward to this meeting, especially when day after day from all parts of the world I received in the Vatican good news about all the initiatives that have marked your journey here. And often, even without having met you, I commended you one by one in my prayers to the Lord. He has always known you, and he loves each one of you personally.
With fraternal affection I greet the Cardinals and Bishops who are here with you; in particular Bishop Jacques Berthelet, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Canada, Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic, Archbishop of this city, and Cardinal James Francis Stafford, President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. To all of you I say: may your contacts with your Pastors help you to discover and appreciate more and more the beauty of the Church, experienced as missionary communion.
2. Listening to the long list of countries from which you come, we have practically made a trip round the world. Behind each of you I have glimpsed the faces of all your fellow young people whom I have met in the course of my apostolic travels, and whom in a way you represent here. I have imagined you on a journey, walk-ing in the shadow of the Jubilee Cross, on this great youth pilgrimage which, moving from continent to conti-nent, is eager to hold the whole world in a close embrace of faith and hope.
Today this pilgrimage makes a stop here, on the shores of Lake Ontario. We are reminded of another lake, the Lake of Tiberias, on the shores of which the Lord Jesus made a fascinating proposal to the first disciples, some of whom were probably young like you (cf. Jn 1:35-42).
The Pope, who loves you dearly, has come from afar to listen again with you to Jesus’ words. As was the case for the disciples on that day long ago, these words can set the hearts of young people aflame and motivate their whole lives. I invite you then to make the various activities of this World Youth Day which is just begin-ning a special time when each of you listens attentively to the Lord, with a willing and generous heart, in order to become the “salt of the earth and light of the world” (cf. Mt 5:13-16).
Address of the Holy Father
Dear Young People!
1. What we have just heard is the Magna Carta of Christianity: the Beatitudes. We have seen once more, with the eyes of our heart, what happened at that time. A crowd of people is gathered around Jesus on the mountain: men and women, young people and elderly folk, the healthy and the infirm, who have come from Galilee, but also from Jerusalem, from Judea, from the cities of the Decapolis, from Tyre and Sidon. All of them anxiously awaiting a word, a gesture that will give them comfort and hope.
We too are gathered here, this evening, to listen attentively to the Lord. He looks at you with affection: you come from the different regions of Canada, of the United States, of Central and South America, of Europe, of Africa, of Asia, of Oceania. I have heard your festive voices, your cries, your songs, and I have felt the deep longing that beats within your hearts: you want to be happy!
Dear young people, many and enticing are the voices that call out to you from all sides: many of these voices speak to you of a joy that can be had with money, with success, with power. Mostly they propose a joy that comes with the superficial and fleeting pleasure of the senses.
2. Dear friends, the aged Pope, full of years but still young at heart, answers your youthful desire for happi-ness with words that are not his own. They are words that rang out two thousand years ago. Words that we have heard again tonight: “Blessed are they . . .” The key word in Jesus’ teaching is a proclamation of joy: “Blessed are they . . .”
People are made for happiness. Rightly, then, you thirst for happiness. Christ has the answer to this desire of yours. But he asks you to trust him. True joy is a victory, something which cannot be obtained without a long and difficult struggle. Christ holds the secret of this victory.
You know what came before. It is told in the Book of Genesis: God created man and woman in a para-dise, Eden, because he wanted them to be happy.
Unfortunately, sin spoiled his initial plans. But God did not resign himself to this defeat. He sent his Son into the world in order to give back to us an even more beautiful idea of heaven. God became man — the Fathers of the Church tell us — so that men and women could become God. This is the decisive turning-point, brought about in human history by the Incarnation.
3. What struggle are we talking about? Christ himself gives us the answer. “Though he was in the form of God,” Saint Paul has written, he “did not count equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant . . . he humbled himself and became obedient unto death” (Phil 2:6-8). It was a struggle unto death. Christ fought this battle not for himself but for us. From his death, life has sprung forth. The tomb at Calvary has become the cradle of the new humanity on its journey to true happiness.
The “Sermon on the Mount” marks out the map of this journey. The eight Beatitudes are the road signs that show the way. It is an uphill path, but he has walked it before us. He said one day: “He who follows me will not walk in darkness” (Jn 8:12). And at another time he added: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (Jn 15:11).
It is by walking with Christ that we can achieve joy, true joy! Precisely for this reason he again repeats the proclamation of joy to you today:
“Blessed are they . . .”
Now that we are about to welcome his glorious Cross, the Cross that has accompanied young people on the roadways of the world, let this consoling and demanding word echo in the silence of your hearts: “Blessed are they. . .”
4. Gathered around the Lord’s Cross, we look to him: Jesus did not limit himself to proclaiming the Beati-tudes, he lived them! Looking at his life anew, re-reading the Gospel, we marvel: the poorest of the poor, the most gentle among the meek, the person with the purest and most merciful heart is none other than Jesus. The Beatitudes are nothing more than the description of a face, his face!
At the same time, the Beatitudes describe what a Christian should be: they are the portrait of Jesus’ disci-ple, the picture of those who have accepted the Kingdom of God and want their life to be in tune with the demands of the Gospel. To these Jesus speaks, calling them “blessed”.
The joy promised by the Beatitudes is the very joy of Jesus himself: a joy sought and found in obedience to the Father and in the gift of self to others.
5. Young people of Canada, of America and of every part of the world! By looking at Jesus you will learn what it means to be poor in spirit, meek and merciful; what it means to seek justice, to be pure in heart, to be peacemakers.
With your gaze set firmly on him, you will discover the path of forgiveness and reconciliation in a world often laid waste by violence and terror. Last year we saw with dramatic clarity the tragic face of human malice. We saw what happens when hatred, sin and death take command.
But today Jesus’ voice resounds in the midst of our gathering. His is a voice of life, of hope, of forgive-ness; a voice of justice and of peace. Let us listen to this voice!
6. Dear friends, the Church today looks to you with confidence and expects you to be the people of the Beatitudes. Blessed are you if, like Jesus, you are poor in spirit, good and merciful; if you really seek what it just and right; if you are pure of heart, peacemakers, lovers of the poor and their servants. Blessed are you!
Only Jesus is the true Master, only Jesus speaks the unchanging message that responds to the deepest long-ings of the human heart, because he alone knows “what is in each person” (cf. Jn 2:25). Today he calls you to be the salt and light of the world, to choose goodness, to live in justice, to become instruments of love and peace. His call has always demanded a choice between good and evil, between light and darkness, between life and death. He makes the same invitation today to you who are gathered here on the shores of Lake Ontario.
7. What call will those on early morning watch choose to follow? To believe in Jesus is to accept what he says, even when it runs contrary to what others are saying. It means rejecting the lure of sin, however attractive it may be, in order to set out on the difficult path of the Gospel virtues.
Young people listening to me, answer the Lord with strong and generous hearts! He is counting on you. Never forget: Christ needs you to carry out his plan of salvation! Christ needs your youth and your generous enthusiasm to make his proclamation of joy resound in the new millennium. Answer his call by placing your lives at his service in your brothers and sisters!
Trust Christ, because he trusts you.
8. Lord Jesus Christ, proclaim once more your Beatitudes in the presence of these young people, gathered in Toronto for the World Youth Day. Look upon them with love and listen to their young hearts, ready to put their future on the line for you.
You have called them to be the “salt of the earth and light of the world”. Continue to teach them the truth and beauty of the vision that you proclaimed on the Mountain.
Make them men and women of the Beatitudes! Let the light of your wisdom shine upon them, so that in word and deed they may spread in the world the light and salt of the Gospel.
Make their whole life a bright reflection of you, who are the true light that came into this world so that whoever believes in you will not die, but will have eternal life (cf. Jn 3:16)!

Jóvenes del mundo, queridos Amigos: ¡con afecto en el Señor os saludo a todos! Estoy feliz de estar nuevamente entre vosotros, después de los días que habéis pasado en las catequesis y en reflexión, conociéndose unos a otros y celebrando. Nos estamos acercando a la fase final de vuestra Jornada Mundial, cuyo punto culminante será nuestra celebración Eucarística de mañana. En vosotros, reunidos desde todos los rincones del mundo, la Iglesia ve su futuro, y siente el llamado a la juventud con la cual el Espíritu Santo siempre la enriquece. El entusiasmo y alegría que mostráis son un signo seguro de vuestro amor por el Señor, y de vuestro deseo de servirlo en la Iglesia y en vuestros hermanos y hermanas.
2. Hace unos días, en Wadowice, mi ciudad natal, tuvo lugar el Tercer Foro Internacional de Jóvenes. Reunió a jóvenes católicos, griego-católicos y ortodoxos de Polonia y Europa Oriental. Hoy, miles de jóvenes de toda Polonia están allí reunidos y unidos a nosotros por medio de un enlace televisivo para celebrar esta Vigilia de Oración con nosotros. 3. Durante la Vigilia de esta noche daremos la bienvenida a la Cruz de Cristo, el signo del amor de Dios por la humanidad. Alabaremos al Señor Resucitado, la luz que brilla en las tinieblas. Rezaremos con las palabras de los Salmos, repitiendo las mismas palabras que Jesús utilizó durante su vida en la tierra cuando hablaba a su Padre. Hoy en día, los Salmos son aún la oración de la Iglesia. Luego, escucharemos la Palabra de Dios, una lámpara para nuestros pasos, una luz para nuestro camino (cf. Salmos 119,105). Os invito a que seáis la voz de los jóvenes de todo el mundo, para expresar vuestras alegrías, vuestras decepciones, vuestras esperanzas. Poned vuestra atención en Jesús, el Dios Viviente, y repetid lo que los Apóstoles le pidieron: "Señor, enséñanos a orar." La oración será la sal que da sabor a vuestras vidas, y os conduce a Él, la verdadera luz de la humanidad.
DISCURSO DEL SANTO PADRE
Queridos jóvenes:
1. En 1985, cuando yo quería comenzar con las Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud, pensaba en las palabras del Apóstol Juan que hemos escuchado esta noche: "Lo que existía desde el principio, lo que hemos oído, lo que hemos visto con nuestros propios ojos, lo que contemplamos y palparon nuestras manos, la Palabra de la vida... os lo anunciamos" (1 Jn 1, 1.3). E imaginaba las Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud como un momento poderoso en el cual los jóvenes del mundo pudieran encontrar a Cristo, que es eternamente joven, y pudieran aprender de él cómo ser portadores del Evangelio para otros jóvenes. Esta noche, junto a ustedes, alabo a Dios y Le doy gracias por el don otorgado a la Iglesia por medio de las Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud. Millones de jóvenes han participado, y como resultado se han vuelto mejores testigos de Cristo y más comprometidos. Estoy especialmente agradecido con vosotros, que habéis respondido a mi invitación de venir aquí a Toronto para "contar al mundo vuestra alegría de haber encontrado a Cristo Jesús, vuestro deseo de conocerlo cada vez mejor, vuestro compromiso de anunciar el Evangelio de salvación hasta los extremos confines de la tierra". 2. El nuevo milenio se abrió con dos panoramas contrastantes: uno, la imagen de multitudes de peregrinos que fueron a Roma durante el Gran Jubileo para pasar a través de la Puerta Santa que es Cristo, nuestro Salvador y Redentor; y la otra, el terrible ataque terrorista en Nueva York, una imagen que es una clase de icono de un mundo en el cual la hostilidad y el odio parecen prevalecer. La pregunta que surge es dramática: ¿sobre qué cimientos debemos construir la nueva era de la historia que está emergiendo de las grandes transformaciones del siglo veinte? ¿Es suficiente depender solamente de la revolución tecnológica que ahora está teniendo lugar, que parece responder únicamente a los criterios de productividad y eficiencia, sin referencia alguna a la dimensión espiritual del individuo o a valores éticos compartidos universalmente? ¿Es correcto contentarse con respuestas provisorias para las preguntas fundamentales, y abandonar la vida a los impulsos de los instintos, a sensaciones efímeras o a modas pasajeras? La pregunta no desaparecerá: ¿sobré qué cimientos, sobre qué certezas deberíamos construir nuestras vidas y la vida de la comunidad a la cual pertenecemos?
3. Queridos amigos: de manera espontánea en vuestros corazones, en el entusiasmo de vuestros años jóvenes vosotros conocéis la respuesta, y la estáis diciendo por medio de vuestra presencia aquí esta noche: Cristo sólo es la piedra angular sobre la cual es posible construir de manera sólida nuestra existencia. Solamente Cristo -conocido, contemplado y amado- es el amigo fiel que nunca nos defrauda, que se convierte en nuestro compañero de viaje y que con sus palabras hace que arda nuestro corazón (cf. Lc 24,13-35). El siglo veinte a menudo trató de prescindir de esa piedra angular, y trató de construir la ciudad humana sin referencia a Dios. ¡En realidad terminó construyendo la ciudad contra el hombre! Los cristianos son conscientes de que no es posible rechazar o ignorar a Dios sin degradar al hombre.
4. La aspiración que alimenta la humanidad, entre incontables injusticias y sufrimientos, es la esperanza de una nueva civilización caracterizada por la libertad y la paz. Pero para realizar tal emprendimiento, se necesita una nueva generación de constructores. Movidos no por el temor ni la violencia sino por la urgencia de un amor genuino, tienen que aprender a construir, ladrillo por ladrillo, la ciudad de Dios dentro de la ciudad del hombre. Permitidme, queridos jóvenes, encomendar esta esperanza mía a vosotros: ¡vosotros debéis ser esos "constructores"! Vosotros sois los hombres y las mujeres del mañana. El futuro está en vuestros corazones y en vuestras manos. Dios os confía la tarea, a veces difícil y edificante, de trabajar con Él en la construcción de la civilización del amor.
5. De la Carta del Apóstol San Juan - el más joven de los apóstoles, y quizás por esa precisa razón el más amado por el Señor - hemos escuchado estas palabras: "Dios es luz sin tiniebla alguna" (1 Jn 1,5). Pero, Juan observa, nadie ha visto a Dios. Es Jesús, el Hijo único del Padre, quien nos lo ha revelado (cf. Jn 1,18). Y si Jesús ha revelado a Dios, él ha revelado la luz. Con Cristo, de hecho, "la luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre" (Jn 1:9) ha venido al mundo. Queridos jóvenes: dejad invadirse por la luz de Cristo, y difundir esa luz a doquiera que estéis. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica dice: "la luz de la mirada de Jesús ilumina los ojos de nuestro corazón; nos enseña a ver todo a la luz de su verdad y de su compasión por todos los hombres" (N. 2715). Si vuestra amistad con Cristo, vuestro conocimiento de su misterio, vuestra entrega de vosotros mismos a Jesús, son genuinos y profundos, seréis "hijos de la luz", y vosotros seréis "hijos de la luz", y os convertiréis en "la luz del mundo". Por esta razón, os repito las palabras del Evangelio: "Brille así vuestra luz delante de los hombres, para que vean vuestras buenas obras y glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos". (Mt 5,16)
6. Esta noche, el Papa, junto con todos vosotros, jóvenes de todos los continentes, reafirma ante el mundo la fe que sostiene la vida de la Iglesia. Cristo es la luz de las naciones. Murió y resucitó para devolverles la esperanza de la eternidad a quienes viajan por el tiempo. Nada humano es herido por el Evangelio: todo valor auténtico, en cualquier cultura que sea, es aceptado y elevado por Cristo. Sabiendo esto, los cristianos no pueden dejar de sentir en sus corazones el orgullo y la responsabilidad de su llamado a ser testigos de la luz del Evangelio. Precisamente por esta razón, os digo esta noche: ¡que la luz de Cristo brille en vuestras vidas! ¡No esperéis a ser más grande en edad para poneros en el camino de la santidad! La santidad siempre es juvenil, de la misma manera que la juventud de Dios es eterna. Comunicad a todas las personas la belleza del encuentro con Dios que da sentido a vuestra vida. En la búsqueda de la justicia, en la promoción de la paz, en vuestro compromiso con la hermandad y solidaridad, ¡no dejéis que nadie os sobrepase! Qué hermosa es la canción que hemos estado escuchando durante estos días: "¡Luz del mundo! ¡Sal de la tierra!" ¡Sed para el mundo el rostro del amor! ¡Ser para la tierra el reflejo de su luz! Ese es el regalo más hermoso y preciado que podéis darles a la Iglesia y al mundo. Vosotros sabéis que el Papa está con vosotros, con su oración y bendición afectuosa.

HOLY FATHER’S OPENING GREETING
Young people of the world, dear Friends,
With affection in the Lord I greet you all! I am happy to be among you again, after the days you have spent in catechesis and reflection, meeting one another and celebrating. We are coming towards the final phase of your World Day, the high point of which will be our Eucharistic celebration tomorrow.
In you, gathered from the four corners of the world, the Church sees her future, and feels the call to the youthfulness with which the Holy Spirit always enriches her. The enthusiasm and joy that you are showing are a sure sign of your love for the Lord, and of your desire to serve him in the Church and in your brothers and sisters.
2. A few days ago, in Wadowice, my home town, the Third International Young People’s Forum took place. It brought together Catholics, Greek-Catholics and Orthodox youth from Poland and Eastern Europe. Today, thousands of young people from all over Poland are there and are connected with us through a television link-up to celebrate this Prayer Vigil with us. Allow me to greet them in Polish:
3. During this evening’s Vigil we shall welcome the Cross of Christ, the sign of God’s love for humanity. We shall praise the Risen Lord, the light that shines in the darkness. We shall pray in the words of the Psalms, repeating the very words that Jesus used during his earthly life when he spoke to his Father. The Psalms are still the prayer of the Church today.
Then we shall listen to the word of the Lord, a lamp for our steps, a light for our path (cf. Ps 119:105). I invite you to be the voice of the young people of the whole world, to express their joys, their disap-pointments, their hopes. Look to Jesus, the living One, and repeat what the Apostles asked: “Lord, teach us how to pray”. Prayer will be the salt that gives flavour to your lives, and leads you to him, humanity’s true light.
ADDRESS BY THE HOLY FATHER
Dear Young People,
1. When, back in 1985, I wanted to start the World Youth Days, I was thinking of the words of the Apos-tle John that we have listened to this evening: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life. . . we proclaim also to you” (1 Jn 1:1.3). And I imagined the World Youth Days as a powerful moment in which the young people of the world could meet Christ, who is eternally young, and could learn from him how to be bearers of the Gospel to the young people.
This evening, together with you, I praise God and give thanks to him for the gift bestowed on the Church through the World Youth Days. Millions of young people have taken part, and as a result have become better and more committed Christian witnesses. I am especially thankful to you, who have responded to my invitation to come here to Toronto in order to “tell the world of the happiness you have found in meeting Jesus Christ, of your desire to know him better, of how you are committed to proclaiming the Gospel of salvation to the ends of the earth!” (Message for the 17th World Youth Day, No. 5).
2. The new millennium opened with two contrasting scenarios: one, the sight of multitudes of pilgrims coming to Rome during the Great Jubilee to pass through the Holy Door which is Christ, our Savior and Redeemer; and the other, the terrible terrorist attack on New York, an image that is a sort of icon of a world in which hostility and hatred seem to prevail. The question that arises is dramatic: on what foundations must we build the new historical era that is emerging from the great transformations of the twentieth century? Is it enough to rely on the technological revolution now taking place, which seems to respond only to criteria of productivity and efficiency, without reference to the individual’s spiritual dimension or to any universally shared ethical values? Is it right to be content with provisional answers to the ultimate questions, and to abandon life to the impulses of instinct, to short-lived sensations or passing fads? The question will not go away: on what foundations, on what certainties should we build our lives and the life of the community to which we belong?
3. Dear Friends, spontaneously in your hearts, in the enthusiasm of your young years you know the answer, and you are saying it through your presence here this evening: Christ alone is the cornerstone on which it is possible solidly to build one’s existence. Only Christ – known, contemplated and loved – is the faithful friend who never lets us down, who becomes our travelling companion, and whose words warm our hearts (cf. Lk 24:13-35).
The twentieth century often tried to do without that cornerstone, and attempted to build the city of man without reference to Him. It ended by actually building that city against man! Christians know that it is not possible to reject or ignore God without demeaning man.
4. The aspiration that humanity nurtures, amid countless injustices and sufferings, is the hope of a new civilization marked by freedom and peace. But for such an undertaking, a new generation of builders is needed. Moved not by fear or violence but by the urgency of genuine love, they must learn to build, brick by brick, the city of God within the city of man. Allow me, dear young people, to consign this hope of mine to you: you must be those “builders”! You are the men and women of tomorrow. The future is in your hearts and in your hands. God is entrusting to you the task, at once difficult and uplifting, of working with him in the building of the civilization of love.
5. From the Letter of John – the youngest of the apostles, and maybe for that very reason the most loved by the Lord – we have listened to these words: “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 Jn 1:5).
But, John observes, no one has ever seen God. It is Jesus, the only Son of the Father, who has revealed him to us (cf. Jn 1:18). And if Jesus has revealed God, he has revealed the light. With Christ in fact “the true light that enlightens every man” (Jn 1:9) has come into the world.
Dear young people, let yourselves be taken over by the light of Christ, and spread that light wher-ever you are. “The light of the countenance of Jesus – says the Catechism of the Catholic Church – illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for all” (No. 2715).
If your friendship with Christ, your knowledge of his mystery, your giving of yourselves to him, are genuine and deep, you will be “children of the light”, and you will become “the light of the world”. For this reason I repeat to you the Gospel words: “Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Mt 5:16).
6. This evening the Pope, along with all of you, young people from every continent, reaffirms before the world the faith that sustains the life of the Church. Christ is the light of the nations. He died and rose again in order to give back to those who journey through time the hope of eternity.
Nothing human is hurt by the Gospel: every authentic value, in whatever culture it appears, is accepted and raised up by Christ. Knowing this, Christians cannot fail to feel in their hearts the pride and responsibility of their call to be witnesses to the light of the Gospel.
Precisely for this reason I say to you this evening: let the light of Christ shine in your lives! Do not wait until you are older in order to set out on the path of holiness! Holiness is always youthful, just as eternal is the youthfulness of God.
Communicate to everyone the beauty of the contact with God that gives meaning to your lives. In the quest for justice, in the promotion of peace, in your commitment to brotherhood and solidarity, let no one surpass you!
How beautiful the song that we have been hearing during these days: “Light of the world! Salt of the earth! Be for the world the face of love! Be for the earth the reflection of his light!”
That is the most beautiful and precious gift that you can give to the Church and the world. You know that the Pope is with you, with his prayer and fond blessing.

Cada vez que oro, oro, esté consciente de ello o no, "por Cristo, con Cristo y en Cristo." Esto no hace mi horizonte intelectual y espiritual más estrecho; de hecho, le ofrece su más grande expansión y profundidad. Porque cuando estoy con Jesús, estoy en contacto con el ser humano más verdadero, más real y más genuino, y estoy en contacto directo con Dios Mismo.
1) Jesús es un ser humano totalmente genuino. En Él no encontramos ninguna autodramatización, ningún fingimiento. En él no encontramos evasión alguna a la voluntad de Dios, ninguna connivencia con el mal, ninguna verdad a medias y al mismo tiempo ninguna censura. Él es total bondad, compasión, perdón, amor. Fue capaz de ser "amigo de los publicanos y pecadores" sin nunca comprar esas amistades por medio de la connivencia ni por medio del fingimiento que el pecado no era un pecado.
Jesús está convencido que, en sus obras, sus palabras y su destino, el Reino de Dios ya está presente, ese Reino que es el propósito final de la creación de Dios y de su redención, el Reino en el cual Dios y Sus criaturas deben estar totalmente unidas, donde la voluntad de Dios reinará con supremacía y sin oposición alguna. Este Reino ya existe en Jesús, este Reino se hace visible y operativo en lo que dice y hace Jesús y en lo que le sucede. Él ya es lo que Dios espera que todo ser humano sea. En Jesús, encontramos un sentido inmenso de responsabilidad que permite que lo que no es bueno en la creación sea destruido y que resiste el deseo impaciente de una escarda prematura.
La resurrección no hace que Jesús incremente su existencia terrenal; sino que la preserva para siempre. Sus palabras, dichas en el tiempo y por consiguiente sujetas a la limitación del tiempo, no sucumben ante el paso del mismo ni el olvido, sino que se convierten, como él mismo, en eternamente verdaderas y válidas. Su camino en la tierra no es el de incalculables millones de seres humanos que dejan de importar incluso a quienes son más afectados por ellos, sino que es el camino para cada uno de nosotros. Jesús es y será siempre un judío de Galilea de la primera mitad del primer siglo, que ahora está sentado a la derecha del Padre, que vive y reina para siempre. Ahora es el objeto de la proclamación de la Iglesia porque el Reino de Dios ha alcanzado su realidad completa en él y para nosotros en él.
2) Pero Jesús no es solamente un ser humano, hecho eterno en su resurrección y ascensión. También es Dios. En el Monte de la Transfiguración estamos en contacto con la revelación de Dios; sólo el Padre conoce al Hijo, y Él lo revela. Cuando poco antes de la Transfiguración, Pedro confiesa que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, se le dice que ni su carne ni su sangre, es decir: su inteligencia humana y las facultades de deducción, se lo revelaron sino el Padre que está en el cielo. Para conocer quién es Jesús realmente dependemos no de nuestra inteligencia ni perspicacia, sino de la revelación de Dios.
¿Quién es Jesús? Luz y blancura son los elementos de Dios. Se nos ha dicho que "… Dios es Luz, en él no hay tiniebla alguna." (1 Jn 1, 5). Esta luz no viene del exterior de Jesús, como el sol brilla a través de un vitral, sino desde dentro de Jesús. Luego la voz de Dios explica con detalle: Jesús es el Hijo amado de Dios.
Sí, Jesús es un ser humano, pero más que eso, él es Dios, Dios con nosotros, Dios hecho tangible y visible. Jesús es lo mejor que nos pudo haber ocurrido, el signo más grande de la voluntad de Dios de estar nosotros, de Su amor por nosotros.
Qui est Jésus? Lumière et Blancheur rayonante sont les éléments de Dieu. Car "Dieu est lumière et en lui il n'y a aucune obscurité" (1 Jn 1:5). Cette lumière ne vient pas de l'extérieur de Jésus comme le soleil brille à travers un vitrail main émane de l'intérieur de sa Personne. La voix de Dieu le dit clairement: Jésus est le Fils bien aimé de Dieu.
Oui Jésus est un être humain, mais bien plus que cela, il est Dieu, Dieu avec nous, Dieu rendu visible. Jésus demeure le grand signe de la volonté de Dieu d'être avec nous et de son amour pour nous. [N. Traductor: ver los dos párrafos anteriores en español para su traducción.]
Jesús es el Centro de toda la humanidad, de toda la historia humana. En él todos nuestros sueños e ideales, nuestras ideas más grandes, religiosas o laicas, encuentra su sentido esencial y realización. Como en el Antiguo Testamento, presente en el Monte de la Transfiguración en Moisés y Elías, la Ley y los Profetas, está incompleto sin él, así como todas las otras ideas humanas, sin importar qué tan profundas y hermosas sean, están incompletas si se apartan de él. Solamente en él encontrarán el corazón de sus corazones, la última verdad y bondad para las cuales ellos se esfuerzan.
No por nada Pedro exclama: "Señor, bueno es estarnos aquí." "Estar con Jesús" es la descripción más excelente de la existencia y vida de un discípulo.
3) La orden: "Escuchadlo", es la consecuencia natural de quién es Jesús. En Jesús y a través de Jesús, Dios nos enseña cómo es y qué espera de nosotros.
Al estar con Jesús, al escucharlo y al seguirlo, nos volvemos uno con Él; somos recubiertos con su propia luz. Nosotros mismos nos volvemos luz: "Vosotros sois la luz del mundo... Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra".
En nuestra vida diaria, en nuestras palabras, en nuestras acciones más comunes y en toda nuestra forma de comportarnos y reaccionar, se nos pide mostrar la faz de Dios al mundo. Se nos pide que estemos dispuestos a dar respuesta a todo el nos que pida razón de nuestra esperanza (cf. 1 P 3,15). Cuando se presenta la ocasión tenemos que presentar, con calma y seguridad, la fe con la que vivimos; debemos rehusarnos a aparentar una tolerancia políticamente correcta que imagina que todas las religiones y convicciones y valores son igualmente válidos. A través de nosotros, el mundo debe ser atraído a Jesús, y con Él al Padre.

Whenever I pray, I pray, whether I advert to it consciously or not, “through him, with him and in him.” This does not make my intellectual and spiritual horizon narrower; it offers it, in fact, its greatest expansion and depth.
For when I am with Jesus I am in contact with the truest, the most real and genuine human being and I am in direct contact with God Himself.
1) Jesus is a totally genuine human being. In him we detect no self-dramatizing, no striking of poses. In him we find no quibbling about God’s will, no connivance with evil, no compromises, and at the same time no censoriousness. His is total kindness, compassion, forgiveness, love. He was able to be “a friend of publicans and sinners” without ever buying that friendships by means of conniving and pretending that sin was not sin.
Jesus is convinced that, in his works, his words and his destiny, the Kingdom of God is already present, that Kingdom which is the final purpose of God’s creation and redemption, the Kingdom in which God and His creatures are to be fully united, where God’s will will reign supreme and unopposed.
This Kingdom already exists in Jesus, making itself visible and operative in what he says and does and in what happens to him. He already is what God expects every human being to be. In Jesus we find an immense sense of responsibility which permits nothing that is good in creation to be destroyed and resists the impatient desire of a premature weeding.
The resurrection does not make Jesus outgrow his earthly existence; rather, it preserves it forever. His words, spoken in time and thus subject to its limitations, do not fall victim to its passing and oblivion but become, like himself, eternally true and valid. His way on earth is not one of the untold millions of human existences which cease to matter even to those most affected by them, but the way for every single one of us. Jesus is and will remain forever a Galilean Jew of the first half of the first century, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father, living and reigning forever. He is now the object of the Church’s proclamation because God’s Kingdom has reached full reality in him and for us in him.
2) But Jesus is not only a human being, made eternal in his resurrection and ascension. He is also God. On the Mount of Transfiguration we are in touch with God’s revelation; the Father alone knows the Son, and it is His to reveal him. When Peter, shortly before the Transfiguration, confesses Jesus to be the Son of God he is told that flesh and blood, i.e., his human intelligence and powers of deduction, did not disclose it to him but the Father in heaven. To know who Jesus really is we depend, not on our cleverness and insight, but on God’s revelation.
Who is Jesus? Light and whiteness are God’s element. We are told that “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 Jn 1:5). This light is not streaming from outside of Jesus, as the sun shines through a stained-glass window, but from within Jesus. God’s voice then spells it out: Jesus is God’s beloved Son.
Yes, Jesus is a human being; but far more than that, he is God, God with us, God made tangible and observable. Jesus is the greatest thing that could ever happen to us, the highest sign of God’s will to be with us, of His love for us.
Qui est Jésus? Lumière et Blancheur rayonante sont les éléments de Dieu. Car “Dieu est lumière et en lui il n’y a aucune obscurité” (1 Jn 1:5). Cette lumière ne vient pas de l’extérieur de Jésus comme le soleil brille à travers un vitrail main émane de l’intérieur de sa Personne. La voix de Dieu le dit clairement: Jésus est le Fils bien aimé de Dieu.
Oui Jésus est un être humain, mais bien plus que cela, il est Dieu, Dieu avec nous, Dieu rendu visible. Jésus demeure le grand signe de la volonté de Dieu d’être avec nous et de son amour pour nous.
Jesus is the Centre of all humanity, of all human history. In him all our dreams and ideals, our greatest insights, religious or secular, find their ultimate sense and fulfilment. As the Old Testament, present on the Mount of Transfiguration in Moses and Elijah, Law and the Prophets, is incomplete without him, so all other human insights, no matter how profound and beautiful, are incomplete apart from him. Only in him will they find the heart of their heart, the final truth and goodness for which they strive.
No wonder Peter exclaims, “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” “To be with Jesus” is the finest description of a disciple’s being and life.
3) The command, “Listen to him”, is the natural consequence of who Jesus is. In Jesus and through Jesus God shows us what He is like and what He expects of us.
By being with Jesus, by listening to him and following him, we become one with him; we become suffused with his own light. We become light ourselves:
“You are the light of the world; You are the salt of the earth.”
In our day-to-day life, in our words, in our most ordinary actions and our entire way of acting and reacting we are asked to show God’s countenance to the world. We are asked to be ready to make our defense to anyone who demands from us an accounting for the hope that is in us (cf. 1 Peter 3:15).
When occasions arise we ought to present, calmly and confidently, the faith we live by; we must refuse to feign the politically correct tolerance which imagines that all religions and convictions and values are equally valid.
Through us, the world is to be drawn to Jesus, and with him to the Father.

"Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra... Vosotros sois la luz del mundo" (Mt 5, 13.14)
Queridos jóvenes de la XVII Jornada Mundial de la Juventud:
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas:
1. En una montaña cerca del lago de Galilea, los discípulos de Jesús escucharon su voz suave y apremiante; tan suave como el paisaje de Galilea misma, tan apremiante como una llamada a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre la verdad y la falsedad. El Señor dijo palabras de vida que resonarían para siempre en los corazones de sus seguidores. Hoy en día, él está diciendo las mismas palabras a vosotros, jóvenes de Toronto y Ontario, de todo Canadá, de los Estados Unidos, del Caribe, del continente americano de habla española y de habla portuguesa, de Europa, África, Asia y Oceanía. ¡Escuchad la voz de Jesús en la profundidad de vuestros corazones! Sus palabras os dicen quiénes sois como cristianos. Os dicen que debéis hacer para permanecer en su amor.
2. Pero Jesús ofrece una cosa, y el "espíritu del mundo" ofrece otra. En la Lectura de hoy de la Carta a los Efesios, San Pablo nos cuenta que Jesús nos saca de las tinieblas y nos conduce a la luz (cf. Ef. 5,8). Tal vez, el gran Apóstol esté pensando en la luz que lo encegueció - al perseguidor de cristianos- en su camino a Damasco. Cuando luego recobró la vista, nada era como antes. Había nacido de nuevo y nada le quitaría su alegría recién encontrada. Vosotros también estáis llamados a ser transformados. San Pablo dice: "Despierta tú que duermes, levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo será tu luz" (Ef 5,14). El "espíritu del mundo" ofrece muchas falsas ilusiones y parodias de felicidad. Tal vez no haya oscuridad más grande que la oscuridad que entra en las almas de los jóvenes cuando falsos profetas extinguen en ellos la luz de la fe, de la esperanza y del amor. El engaño más grande, y la fuente más profunda de desdicha, es la ilusión de encontrar la vida excluyendo a Dios, de encontrar la libertad excluyendo las verdades morales y la responsabilidad personal.
3. El Señor os llama a elegir entre estas dos voces que compiten por vuestra alma. Esa decisión es la esencia y el desafío de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. ¿Por qué habéis venido a reunirse desde todas partes del mundo? Para decir en vuestros corazones: "Señor, ¿a quién vamos a ir? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna" (Jn 6,68). Jesús, el amigo íntimo de todo joven, tiene palabras de vida. El mundo que heredáis es un mundo que desesperadamente necesita un nuevo sentido de hermandad y solidaridad humana. Es un mundo que necesita ser tocado y sanado por la belleza y la riqueza del amor de Dios. Necesita testigos de ese amor. Os necesita a vosotros, para que seáis sal de la tierra y luz del mundo.
4. La sal se usa para conservar y mantener sanos los alimentos. Como apóstoles del tercer milenio os corresponde a vosotros conservar y mantener viva la conciencia de la presencia de Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador, de modo especial en la celebración de la Eucaristía, memorial de su muerte redentora y de su gloriosa resurrección. Debéis mantener vivo el recuerdo de las palabras de vidas que pronunció, de las espléndidas obras de misericordia y de bondad que realizó. ¡Debéis constantemente recordar al mundo que "el Evangelio es fuerza de Dios que salva" (Rm 1,16)! La sal condimenta y da sabor a la comida. Siguiendo a Cristo, debéis cambiar y mejorar el "sabor" de la historia humana. Con vuestra fe, esperanza y amor, con vuestra inteligencia, fortaleza y perseverancia, debéis humanizar el mundo en que vivimos. El modo para alcanzarlo lo indicaba ya el Profeta Isaías en la primera lectura de hoy: "Suelta las cadenas injustas...parte tu pan con el hambriento... Cuando destierres de ti el gesto amenazador y la maledicencia... brillará tu luz en las tinieblas" (Is 58, 6-10).
5. Incluso una pequeña llama disipa la pesada oscuridad de la noche. ¡Cuánta más luz haríais vosotros, todos juntos, si os unierais como uno en la comunión de la Iglesia! ¡Si amáis a Jesús, amad a la Iglesia! No os desalentéis por los pecados y las fallas de algunos de sus miembros. El daño hecho por algunos sacerdotes y religiosos a los jóvenes y a los vulnerables nos llena a todos con un profundo sentido de tristeza y vergüenza. Pero pensad en la gran mayoría de sacerdotes y religiosos dedicados y generosos, cuyo único deseo es servir y hacer el bien! Hay muchos sacerdotes y personas consagradas hoy en este lugar; ¡estad cerca de ellos y apoyadlos! Y si, en las profundidades de vuestros corazones, sentid la misma llamada al sacerdocio o a la vida consagrada, no temáis a seguir a Cristo por el camino real de la Cruz! En momentos difíciles de la vida de la Iglesia, la búsqueda de la santidad llega a ser aún más urgente.
Y la santidad no es una cuestión de edad, es una cuestión de vivir en el Espíritu Santo, de la misma manera que Kateri Tekakwitha y otros muchos jóvenes lo han hecho. Vosotros sois jóvenes y el Papa es anciano y está un poco cansado, pero él todavía se identifica plenamente con vuestras esperanzas y aspiraciones. Aunque he vivido a través de mucha oscuridad, bajo crueles regímenes totalitarios, he visto bastante para estar totalmente convencido de que ninguna dificultad, ningún temor es tan grande como para sofocar por completo la esperanza que mana eterna del corazón de los jóvenes. ¡No dejéis que esa esperanza muera! ¡Apostad vuestras vidas a eso! No somos la suma de nuestras debilidades y fallas; somos la suma del amor del Padre por nosotros y nuestra capacidad real de convertirnos en imagen de su Hijo.
6. Oh, Señor Jesucristo, mantén a estos jóvenes en tu amor. Permíteles oír tu voz y creer en lo que dices, porque sólo tú tienes las palabras de vida. Enséñales cómo profesar su fe, confiéreles su amor e imparte su esperanza a otros. Hazlos testigos convincentes de tu Evangelio en un mundo tan necesitado de tu gracia salvadora. ¡Hazlos el nuevo pueblo de las Bienaventuranzas, que puedan ser la sal de la tierra y la luz del mundo en el inicio del Tercer Milenio Cristiano! María, Madre de la Iglesia, protege y guía a estos jóvenes hombres y mujeres del siglo veintiuno. Manténnos a todos cerca de tu maternal corazón. Amén.

Concluimos esta espléndida celebración de la Eucaristía con la oración del Ángelus a María, Madre del Redentor. A ella confío los frutos de esta Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, que con el tiempo, con su ayuda, puedan florecer. Esta Jornada Mundial de la Juventud debe significar un redespertar de la atención pastoral para los jóvenes en Canadá. ¡Qué el entusiasmo de este momento sea la chispa que se necesita para iniciar una nueva era de poderosos testigos del Evangelio! Deseo anunciar formalmente que la próxima Jornada Mundial de la Juventud tendrá lugar en el año 2005 en Colonia, Alemania. En la Gran Catedral de Colonia son honradas las reliquias de los Magos, los Hombres Sabios del Oriente que siguieron la estrella que los condujo a Cristo. Como peregrinos, vuestro viaje espiritual a Colonia inicia hoy. ¡Cristo los espera ahí para la Vigésima Jornada Mundial de la Juventud! Que la Virgen María, nuestra Madre en nuestra peregrinación de fe, esté con vosotros en el camino.

Quiero agradecer a todos los que han ayudado a hacer que la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud sea un gran éxito: los ciudadanos de Toronto, los voluntarios, la policía, el departamento de bomberos, el Alcalde y las autoridades de cada nivel del gobierno canadiense. Mis más sinceros saludos para las otras Iglesias Cristianas y Comunidades representadas aquí, así como a los seguidores de otras tradiciones religiosas. Mi deseo para todos vosotros que estáis aquí es que los compromisos que habéis hecho durante estos días de fe y celebración traigan abundantes frutos de dedicación y testimonio. ¡Que siempre atesoréis el recuerdo de Toronto!
Extiendo una palabra especial de gratitud al Arzobispo de Toronto, Cardenal Ambrozic, a la Conferencia de Obispos Canadienses y al Comité Organizador. Agradezco también al Consejo Pontificio para los Laicos en la persona de su Presidente, Cardenal James Francis Stafford. Saludo a los Cardenales y Obispos que han venido de otras partes del mundo, y a todos los sacerdotes, diáconos y religiosos que compartieron estos días con los jóvenes. Queridos jóvenes italianos: Mantened vivo el regalo de fe que os ha sostenido en estos días. La Iglesia necesita vuestra dedicación. Arrivederci a Roma!
Queridos amigos de habla alemana: Vosotros de una manera especial tenéis que mantener vivo el espíritu de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, con el fin de preparaos para Colonia en 2005. Trabajad para construir una civilización de amor y justicia. Dejad que vuestra luz lleve a muchos otros al reino de Cristo de santidad, verdad y justicia.
Mis pensamientos van a mi tierra natal de Polonia, la cual muy pronto visitaré nuevamente. Nunca perdáis la vista de vuestra herencia cristiana. “You are the salt of the earth!
You are the light of the world!” (Mt 5:13-14)
Dear Young People of the Seventeenth World Youth Day,
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
1. On a hillside near the lake of Galilee, Jesus’s disciples listened to his gentle and urgent voice; as gentle as the landscape of Galilee itself, as urgent as a call to choose between life and death, between truth and falsehood. The Lord spoke words of life that would echo for ever in the hearts of his followers.
Today he is speaking the same words to you, the young people of Toronto and Ontario, of the whole of Canada, of the United States, of the Caribbean, of Spanish-speaking America and Portuguese-speaking America, of Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Listen to the voice of Jesus in the depths of your hearts! His words tell you who you are as Christians. They tell you what you must do to remain in his love.
2. But Jesus offers one thing, and the “spirit of the world” offers another. In today’s Reading from the Letter to the Ephesians, Saint Paul tells us that Jesus leads us from darkness into light (cf. Eph 5:8). Perhaps the great Apostle is thinking of the light that blinded him, the persecutor of Christians, on the road to Damascus. When later he recovered his sight, nothing was as before. He had been born anew and nothing would ever take his new-found joy away from him.
You too are called to be transformed. “Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Eph 5:14), says Saint Paul.
The “spirit of the world” offers many false illusions and parodies of happiness. There is perhaps no darkness deeper than the darkness that enters young people’s souls when false prophets extinguish in them the light of faith and hope and love. The greatest deception, and the deepest source of unhappiness, is the illusion of finding life by excluding God, of finding freedom by excluding moral truths and personal responsibility.
3. The Lord is calling you to choose between these two voices competing for your souls. That decision is the substance and challenge of World Youth Day. Why have you come together from all parts of the world? To say in your hearts: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (Jn 6:68). Jesus – the intimate friend of every young person – has the words of life.
The world you are inheriting is a world which desperately needs a new sense of brotherhood and human solidarity. It is a world which needs to be touched and healed by the beauty and richness of God’s love. It needs witnesses to that love. It needs you – to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
4. Salt is used to preserve and keep. As apostles for the Third Millennium, your task is to preserve and keep alive the awareness of the presence of our Savior Jesus Christ, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist, the memorial of his saving death and glorious resurrection. You must keep alive the memory of the words of life which he spoke, the marvellous works of mercy and goodness which he performed. You must constantly remind the world of the “power of the Gospel to save” (Rom 1:16)!
Salt seasons and improves the flavour of food. Following Jesus, you have to change and improve the “taste” of human history. With your faith, hope and love, with your intelligence, courage and perseverance, you have to humanize the world we live in, in the way that today’s Reading from Isaiah indicates: “loose the bonds of injustice. . . share your bread with the hungry. . . remove the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil. . . Then your light shall rise in the darkness” (Is 58:6-10).
5. Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night. How much more light will you make, all together, if you bond as one in the communion of the Church! If you love Jesus, love the Church! Do not be discouraged by the sins and failings of some of her members. The harm done by some priests and religious to the young and vulnerable fills us all with a deep sense of sadness and shame. But think of the vast majority of dedicated and generous priests and religious whose only wish is to serve and do good!
There are many priests, seminarians and consecrated persons here today; be close to them and support them! And if, in the depths of your hearts, you feel the same call to the priesthood or consecrated life, do not be afraid to follow Christ on the royal road of the Cross! At difficult moments in the Church’s life, the pursuit of holiness becomes even more urgent. And holiness is not a question of age; it is a matter of living in the Holy Spirit, just as Kateri Tekakwitha and so many other young people have done.
You are young, and the Pope is old and a bit tired. But he still fully identifies with your hopes and aspirations. Although I have lived through much darkness, under harsh totalitarian regimes, I have seen enough evidence to be unshakably convinced that no difficulty, no fear is so great that it can completely suffocate the hope that springs eternal in the hearts of the young.
Do not let that hope die! Stake your lives on it! We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son.
6. O Lord Jesus Christ, keep these young people in your love. Let them hear your voice and believe what you say, for you alone have the words of life. Teach them how to profess their faith, bestow their love, and impart their hope to others. Make them convincing witnesses to your Gospel in a world so much in need of your saving grace. Make them the new people of the Beatitudes, that they may be the salt of the earth and the light of the world at the beginning of the Third Christian Millennium! Mary, Mother of the Church, protect and guide these young men and women of the Twenty-first Century. Keep us all close to your maternal heart. Amen.

We conclude this splendid celebration of the Eucharist with the Angelus prayer to Mary, Mother of the Redeemer.
To her I entrust the fruits of this World Youth Day, that in time, with her help, they may flourish. This World Youth Day must mark a reawakening of pastoral attention to the young in Canada. May the enthusiasm of this moment be the spark that is needed to launch a new era of powerful witness to the Gospel!
I wish formally to announce that the next World Youth Day will take place in 2005, in Cologne, Germany.
In the great Cathedral in Cologne are honoured the relics of the Magi, the Wise Men from the East who followed the star which led them to Christ. As pilgrims, your spiritual journey to Cologne starts today. Christ awaits you there for the Twentieth World Youth Day!
May the Virgin Mary, our Mother on our pilgrimage of faith, be with you on the way.

I wish to thank everyone who has helped to make the World Youth Day such a success: the citizens of Toronto, the volunteers, the police, the fire-department, the Mayor and the authorities at every level of the Canadian government.
My heartfelt greeting goes to the other Christian Churches and Communities represented here, as well as to the followers of other religious traditions.
My wish for all of you who are here is that the commitments you have made during these days of faith and celebration will bring forth abundant fruits of dedication and witness. May you always treasure the memory of Toronto!
I extend a special word of gratitude to Cardinal Ambrozic, Archbishop of Toronto, to the Canadian Bishops Conference and to the Organizing Committee. My thanks also go to the Pontifical Council for the Laity in the person of the President, Cardinal James Francis Stafford.
I greet the Cardinals and Bishops who have come from other parts of the world; and all the priests, deacons and religious who shared these days with the young people.
As we prepare to return home, I say, in the words of Saint Augustine: “We have been happy together in the light we have shared. We have really enjoyed being together. We have really rejoiced. But as we leave one another, let us not leave Him” (In Io.ev. tr., 35,9).
Thanks to all the Spanish-speaking young people. Do not be afraid to respond generously to the Lord’s calling. Let your faith shine before the world. Let your actions show your commitment to the saving message of the Gospel!
Dear Portuguese-speaking young people: The World Youth Day does not end here; it will continue in your lives of fidelity to Christ. Be salt! Be light for the world around you!
Dear Italian young people: Keep alive the gift of faith which has sustained you in these days. The Church needs your dedication. Arrivederci a Roma!
Dear German-speaking friends: You in a special way have to keep alive the spirit of the World Youth Day, in order to prepare for Cologne in 2005. Work to build a civilization of love and justice. Let your light lead many others to Christ’s kingdom of holiness, truth and justice.
My thoughts turn to our Polish homeland, which I will soon visit again. Never lose sight of your Christian heritage. It is there that you will find the wisdom and courage you need to meet the great moral and ethical challenges of our times. I entrust you all to the protection of Our Lady of Jasna Góra.
