Counterfeit Son

by Elaine Marie Alphin

wins the 2001 Edgar Award

At their 56th Annual Edgar Awards Banquet, the Mystery Writers of America presented their 2001 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Mystery to Elaine Marie Alphin for Counterfeit Son.

This young adult novel, published by Harcourt, is the story of the son of a serial killer who poses as one of his father's victims, hoping to find a family and security at last. The novel poses the question: at what point do you stop caring only about your own survival, and accept responsibility for those around you?

The Mystery Writers of America Edgar Awards Banquet was held in the Grand Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, honoring the best in mystry fiction, nonfiction, television and film published or produced in 2000. Over 500 mystery writers, editors and booksellers were in attendance. The evening gave special recognition to Mildred Wirt Benson, the original "Carolyn Keen," author of the Nancy Drew Mystery Series, before announcing the award winners, and there was much celebrating throughout the night.

The best part of the event was meeting such distinguished young adult authors as Carol Plum-Ucci (whose Prinz Honor Book The Body of Christopher Creed was also nominated), and Nancy Werlin (whose mystery Locked Inside was also nominated, and who won two years ago for The Killer's Cousin). The support and enthusiasm of the children's and young adult's writing community made the evening a real winner.
