The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman
The recent publication of Volume 92 of the excellent New German Library series (brought out by Continuum) includes the plays Marat/Sade and The Investigation -- and Weiss's early prose piece (written in 1952, but first published in 1959) The Shadow of the Coachman’s Body.
While it has previously been available in English (this, the E.B.Garside translation, was first brought out in 1969 by Delacorte; another translation, by S.M.Cupitt was brought out by Calder & Boyars in England in 1972), it has generally been dificult to find. We regret that it is not again paired with Weiss's other experimental fiction from that time, The Conversation of the Three Walkers (as it was in the two previous English editions), but we are pleased that it is again readily available. Neatly edited by Robert Cohen (and with a fine and useful introductory essay) this volume certainly stands as the best introduction to Weiss's work that is currently readily available in English, and though it is a bit pricey we recommend it highly. Amazon offers a decent deal on this title (good discounts), both in hardcover and paperback.
Note that in what must have been a last minute editorial decision the translation of the title of the novel was changed to The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman (which, we agree with Cohen, "is closer to the German original and its obsession with language" (p.x)), though both Garside and Cupitt had it the other way. Neither Continuum's catalog nor the dummy cover (see illustration above) admit to the change.
