Diocese-by-Diocese
Evangelism Activity Information

This listing is an in-development feature of the ENE's web site.  The 100 domestic US dioceses are listed alphabetically.  If data for your diocese isn't listed, or is sketchy (we can't post what we don't have) please e-mail in the appropriate data. If you have the info in your computer, please email it so we don't have to re-type. We need your help to keep the data updated!

Most of the data currently in the table and in the diocesan evangelism activity pages of this site has been extracted from diocesan web sites, but submissions by e-mail are increasing (Thank you!!).

The entry "Y" for congregational plants indicates that the diocese has been planting and/or is planning to plant new congregations, but the precise number is not known.

The entry "nws" in the last column means that there is no (diocesan) web site, and that no further information has been sent in, in response to the ENE's request e-mailed to all on-line bishops.  The entry "No" means that the diocese has a web site, but that it contains no data about evangelism activities.  If the diocese has a web site, a link to the diocesan web site will be found on the ENE evangelism activity page for that diocese.  At least one diocese has an "unofficial" web page designed and maintained by volunteers, including the free web space that comes with an AOL membership - if your diocese doesn't have a web page, you might consider doing this.

The center columns contain data related to whether the leadership of each diocese has an active interest in having an active and professionally compent program in congregational development, mission, and evangelism.  These columns show whether (a) the diocesean bishop and (b) other diocesan leaders of each diocese attended the pathbreaking conference on diocesan leadership at Camp Allen in the Diocese of Texas in November 1998.  (For a report on this conference, click here.)

For those who would like to scan diocese-by-diocese, in order to get an overall impression of evangelism activity in ECUSA, the end of each diocesan page contains a link to the page of the next diocese.

Note:  All diocesan bishops were invited to come and/or send representatives to the Texas conference.  There are various possible reasons why a diocesan may not have attended.  Among these are: diocesan's schedule already committed and unchangeable, diocese in transition (elected or electing a new bishop within a year), diocese in controversy, etc. It is more difficult to see why a diocese with high professional standards would not send anyone; however, of the 100 domestic Episcopal dioceses, 63 sent no one.

Texas is having a second conference November 21-23, 1999; perhaps the remaining dioceses will recognize that they might have something significant to gain by attending.

Those who did not attend the 1998 Texas conference can access what happened by ordering videotapes and/or audiotapes of the conference.  Diocesan staff and other leaders may gain from studying the tape of the introduction by the Bishop, the tape of the Congregational Development Canon, and the tape covering their area of responsibility, even if their diocesan is not placing an emphasis on evangelism.  Committee heads in parishes could also learn a lot from the tapes - your diocesan office may have a copy.  Click here for tape ordering info.
