"SEFARADISMO"

El eskritor espanyol Unamuno definio la lingwa komo la "sangre de nuestro espiritu." Ke mejor manera de deskrivir el intime enlase de los Sefaradim kon sus lingwa, el Djudeo-Espanyol. Uno es sinonimo del otro. No puedes ser Sefaradi si tus parientes o tus abuelos no komunikaron en muestra amada lingwa. No puedes ser Sefaradi si los antiguos refranes i konseja ke fueron pasado de generasyon a generasyon no te trayen muncho plazer. Mismo si pedrites el uso del Djudeo-Espanyol tienes dainda en tu korason, en tu alma, el eskarinyo por este enlase ke te izo parte de la Nasyon Sefaradita.

Puede ser ke pedrites la kapacidad de gwadrar esta lingwa kuando tus abuelos se fueron en Portugal i de aya se dispersaron por el Sud-Oeste de la Fransya, en la Holandya, la Ingleterra o el kontinento Amerikano. O la pedrites kuando se fueron en los Estados Italianos, en el Norte del Maroko o en el Impero Otomano. Pude ser la pedrites kuando la eskolas de la Alianza te embezaron en Franses i te disheron ke tu lingwa, el Djudeo-Espanyol, era una lingwa muerta. Puede ser ke la pedrites kuando, por razon ekonomika, tu familia se fue a l'Evropa del Oeste, a l'Afrika Sentral o a l'Amerika del Norte. Pude ser ke la pedrites kuando el nasyonalismo lingwistiko de los estados suksesor del Impero Otomano te forsaron a ambezar las lingwas lokales.

Ma da donde kiera ke fuetes, si te kazates kon alguno ke no era de "los muestros", i mismo si no sos oy un "Sefaradi Tahor", dainda gwadrates en el fondo de tu alma el eskarinyo de esta lingwa ke tomimos kon mosostros kuando salimos d'Espanya en 1492. En verdad era la unika kosa ke podiamos tomar kon mosotros!

I agora mismo este rekuerdo esta amenazado por algunas organizasyones i personas ke pretenden ke ser Sefaradi es solo sinonimo kon unos kuantos rituales Djudios i pronunsiasyon Ebrea, i nada mas.

Para estas personas, muestra lingwa, muestra erendensya, muestras tradisyones, muestra kultura, muestra istorya, muestra manera de vida ke sostenimos kon fidelidad por mas de 500 anyos, no pezan del todo. Pretenden ke la lingwa es nada i la relizyon es todo. Ansina yaman komo Sefaradis a muestros ermanos Djudios ke son de Bokhara o de Marrakech, de Damas o de Teheran, de Baghdad o de Harrar, de Bombay o de Sana'a.

Es la ultima ignoransya de kontinuar a insistir ke la nasyon Djudia tiene solo dos divisyones kultural importantes, los Sefaradim i los Ashkenazim. Estas organisasyones i personas ke persisten en sus aljasaras simplistikas se olviden ke los Mizrahim son la treser divisyon de muestro pueblo. Definir a todos los Djudios ke no son Ashkenazim komo Sefaradim es un insulto a muestra erensya. Esto toma de los Sefardim el derecho de identifyarse no solo a traves su relizyon, ma tambien a traves de su lingwa, su enrensya i su istorya.

I la istorya de los Sefardis es klara. Fuimos dezraygardos de Espanya porke eramos Djudios, ma mos yamamos Sefaradim porke vinimos de Espanya i gwadrimos bivas muestra lingwa i kultura espanyola durante munchos siglos. I dinguno no mos deve rovarlo!

Sefaradis salimos d'Espanya, ma esto no kere dezir ke solamente somos Djudios, ma tambien ke somos el luzero de una tradisyon Espanyola a la kuala mos apegimos durante los ultimos 500 anyos.

A estas organisasyones i personas ke tienen un temario ke agwente, de kualkiera manera, muestra definisyon del Sefaradismo, les digamos ke no vayan kontra la fuersa de la istorya. En la fin la verdad vensera!

EL ORDEN DEL MERITO CIVIL

       On Sunday November 9, 1997, the KING of SPAIN, DON JUAN CARLOS I, awarded the order of  the MERITO CIVIL to Dr. Albert de Vidas, editor of ERENSIA SEFARDI. The ceremony took place at the residence of Ambassador Jose Allendesalazar, Consul General of Spain in New York. Ambassador Allendesalazar presented the Medal and the Certificate of the MERITO CIVIL in the name of the King.

       Present at the ceremony were family members, friends and supporters of ERENSIA SEFARDI, as well as the Consul General of Israel, Shmuel Sisso, and the Consul General of Turkey, Fuat Tanley, and their wives.

       In his remarks, Ambassador Allendesalazar praised the efforts of  Dr. de Vidas in preserving the Sephardic heritage. ERENSIA SEFARDI, he said, has for five years offered the public a concise, interesting and informative newsletter on Sephardic history and culture and has achieved the singular distinction of being a link between Spain and the Sephardim.

      In accepting the award in the name of ERENSIA SEFARDI and the Sephardim of the United States, Dr. de Vidas mentioned the Judeo-Spanish language that kept the link with Spain alive. He also thanked the Ottoman Empire and the traditional hospitality of the Turkish nation for having opened its doors to the exiles of 1492.

      "We Sephardim", he said, "are jealous of our special relationship with Spain", and he urged, "that a special link between us and Spain be instituted, and that an agency of the Spanish government, preferably within the Ministries of Foreign Affairs or of Culture, be established just for that purpose."

     Switching to Judeo-Spanish, Dr. de Vidas pointed out that "esta reunion no pudia tener lugar sin los esfuerzos del kampeon de los Sefaradis, el DR. ANGEL PULIDO. Al rededor del siglo, este distinguido Senador del Reyno, ombre de siensyas i de kultura, dediko su vida entera a avrir las puertas de la rekonsiliasyon entre Espanya i estos espanyoles sin Patria, los Sefaradis.

      En la ponensya ke presenti en 1991 a la Primera Semana Sefaradita de Zaragoza, en Aragon, rekonosi los esfuersos del DR. PULIDO; oy tambien, kero onorar su memoria, i la memoria de mi padre, ke tambien era un gran admirator del Doctor.

      Es por esto ke ERENSIA SEFARDI instituyo el PREMIO PULIDO ke fue entregado el 20 de Octubre 1994 a S.M. DON JUAN CARLOS I, REY D'ESPANYA. Komo sus antepasados, i specialmente komo Alfonso XIII, el Rey mantuvo bivo su interes sobre los Sefaradis i rekonosyo sus fidelidad a su lengwa. Esta lengwa tan kerida fue la unika konsolasyon en estos kinyentos anyos de eksilo.

      Kero terminar estas palavras en meldarvos un poema de Enrike Bejerano, el direktor de la eskuela Sefaradita de Bukarest al rededor del siglo, presentado por el DR. PULIDO a la sesyon del 13 de Noviembre 1903 en el SENADO ESPANYOL:

The Pulido Award (From Erensia Sefardi Vol. 5, No. 1 Winter 1997)

On Monday December 9, 1996, Erensia Sefardi bestowed the fourth annual Pulido Award on H.E. Yitsak Navon, Fifth President of the State of Israel.  The Pulido Award honors the memory of Dr. Angel Pulido, who at the turn of the century dedicated his life to the reconciliation between Spain and the Sephardim and to the preservation of the unique Hispanic culture of the descendants of the Spanish Jews banished in 1492.

It seems appropriate that President Navon, himself a descendant of those exiles and a tireless exponent of our Sephardic Culture, should be honored at this time.                

The last recipient of the Pulido Award was the King of Spain, H.M. Juan Carlos, who was honored in New York City on October 20, 1994.  In choosing President Navon, right after the King, Erensia Sefardi has remembered the two most important personalities who took a leadership role in the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the expulsion.

In front of a large assembly of guests in the auditorium of the Yad Ben Zvi in Jerusalem, Mordehay Arbel, President of the Association of Sefarad enumerated the many contributions that President Navon made for the preservation and dissemination of our Sephardic heritage.  Through his writings, his conferences, his plays and his political action, President Navon has continued the tradition of the Sephardic elite that once guided the Holy Land.  That award was presented to President Navon by former minister Victor Shemtov.

In his acceptance speech, President Navon alluded to the efforts to preserve our Judeo-Spanish language in Israel, efforts that he has spearheaded for a very long time.  In spite of the difficulties associated with such an effort, he said, we must all continue in this path, and save what we can of our rich heritage with all our "alma i korason!"
