The third in the "Blind Dead" quartet, EL BUQUE MALDITO is considered the least of the lot, but it does have plenty of atmosphere, as the undead Templar monks now find themselves aboard a ghost galleon and stranded in another dimension in time and space. Mists abound, and director de Ossorio knows how to build suspense with creaky boards, fog, heart-stopping pauses, and the vulnerability of the inquisitive female. Unfortunately, except for one wicked standout, gore is almost completely missing from this exercise in mood, as is any nudity, a surprisingly lapse, considering this is a de Ossorio film. Also, unfortunately, some of the long shots of the "damned ship" expose the film's inherently low production values.

The print viewed is the English-dubbed Super Video version, titled HORROR OF THE ZOMBIES and now out-of-circulation. Color is quite good, though the film is not shown in its original scope. Unfortunately, there are no plans to release any new, definitive video and/or laserdisc version in America. A few sources proclaim the existence of a 106-minute print, but no such print has yet been found, leading to speculation that it never existed.
