The Sound 1 Spade, B-M Precision Style

The 1 Spade opening in B-M Precision, in first or second seat, shows 11 to 15 HCP with 5-card or longer spades, and without longer hearts, in a hand which is unbalanced or otherwise not right for a 1 Notrump opening. Such hands may have a longer minor, and cards in the minors may be clubs or diamonds with equal probability. Balanced hands with 5-card spades must have 14 or 15 HCP, or 13 HCP with good spades, to warrant this 1 Spade opening.

In third or fourth seat, the 1 Spade opening shows 11 to 15 HCP with 5-card or longer spades, and without longer hearts, or 8 to 11 HCP with good 4-card or longer spades.

Responses to 1 Spade

Principles:
Bergen Raises
Approach forcing (Simple new suit by unpassed hand is forcing)
2-over-1 non-jumps promise good hands
In recognition of opener's limited values, responder has some latitude regarding passing with values.
Pass 0-9 HCP. Either very weak, or short in spades with no good suit. So subsequent actions (except raises) normally suggest spade shortness.
1 NT ! Forcing 6-12 HCP. No 4-card spades.
Fewer than 3-card spades, except with limit raise values.
May have a good, long suit with 6-10 HCP.
Only semi-forcing by a passed hand.
2 C 10+ HCP. 4-card or longer clubs.
Fewer than 4-card spades, except sometimes with good values and good clubs.
2 C ! Two-Way Drury By a passed hand, 10+ SP. 3-card spades.
2 D 10+ HCP. 4-card or longer diamonds.
Fewer than 4-card spades, except sometimes with good values and good diamonds.
2 D ! Two-Way Drury By a passed hand, 10+ SP. 4-card or longer spades.
2 H 10+ HCP. 5-card or longer hearts.
Fewer than 4-card spades, except sometimes with good values and good hearts.
2 S ! Bergen Raise 6-9 SP, with exactly 3-card spade support.
2 NT ! Jacoby Raise 12 or more HCP, with 4-card or longer spades.
3 C ! Bergen Mixed Raise 6-9 SP, with 4-card spades or (rarely) longer.
3 D ! Bergen Limit Raise 10-11 SP, with 4-card spades or (rarely) longer.
3 H ! Bergen Unbalanced Raise 12-15 HCP, unbalanced, with 4-card or longer spades.
3 S ! Bergen Preemptive Raise 5 or fewer SP, with 4-card spades or (rarely) longer.
3 NT ! 13-15 HCP, flat. May have weak 4-card spades.
4 C, 4 D, 4 H Fit Jumps A 10-card or better two-suiter in the bid suit and spades, and strong enough to consider slam.
4 S To play. May be to make with unbalanced hands too strong for a limit raise and too weak for 3 H, or with soft values.
4 NT A powerful hand with spade support, missing only some keycards.
