Fishing At Kelsey Park

Kelsey Park

Kelsy Park is located in Lake Park, Florida off of US-1 just south of Park Avenue. It has benches to sit on, it's lighted, and it's open all night long to fishermen.

We fish primarily big baits for big fish. We like to use cut mullet heads and middles. During the mullet run we use live bait. I like an 80-100 pound monofilament leader with an 8/0 or 9/0 Gamagutzu circle hook. The rods we use are pier rods in the 8-10 foot range and can cast a country mile. We also use a four or five ounce bank weight on a sliding swivel just above the leader.

The water depth ranges from two feet over the sand bar out to about 6-8 feet. The types of fish that we have caught at Kelsey Park are vast. We have caught snook anywhere from 10 pounds to 40 pounds (Carols biggest). Tarpon from 10 pounds 100 pounds, bull-sharks in the 100 pound ranges but have hooked them bigger. Jack crevelles from 5 pounds to 40 plus pounds. Black-tip sharks, nurse sharks, red fish and black drum, sheepshead, sandperch, all kinds of snappers.

Just check out some of my fishing photo's below.

"Is that Huckleberry Finn?"

I have a lot of friends that fish with me at Kelsey Park and here's one of them pictured to the left. That's my pal Carol who I have been fishing with for years. Here she is holding a small tarpon that she caught on live shrimp. Years ago, Carol caught one of Kelsey Parks biggest snook, it weighed in around 40 pounds.

Helping Carol unhook the tarpon is Kevin Umphrey who on this particular occasion thought he was Huckleberry Finn with those lovely "clam digger" pants he was wearing. Where's your raft and your good friend Tom Sawyer Kev?

"Inshore Bull Sharks"

Kelsey Park is only a mile away from the Singer Island Bridge and not very from the Palm Beach Inlet. Therefore we do hook up on a lot of sharks. Here is a picture of Crispy Rider on the left and Jeff "The Penguin" McDonald on the right holding up this 60-pound bull shark that Crispy caught on a mullet head.

The bull shark slurped that tasty morsel down and was screaming line before Crispy knew what to do. Putting the proverbial hammer down on him, Crispy slowly worked the big fish into the shallow sandbar and to the sea wall where I put a lip gaff in her mouth and hoisted the shark up for a photo shot.

If you do come to Kelsey Park and your fishing big baits, remember you just might catch one of these high speeders instead of a snook. So be ready for anything!
