BUILDING COLLECTIVE POWER WITHIN OUR NETWORK
TO CREATE A HUNGER-FREE REGION

The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is the state food bank association representing
America's Second Harvest food banks in Virginia and the District of Columbia and is the largest nonprofit anti-hunger network in the region. Our network consists of  7 regional food banks in 14 locations and more than 3,000 local community agencies and programs.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation created to support the food bank network by developing statewide partnerships, services, and programs that provide food, funding, education, advocacy, outreach, and awareness.

Not only does the Federation network serve its low-income and struggling neighbors every day, but also serves our communities in the event of disaster and emergencies.

VIRGINIA'S ATTORNEY GENERAL FIGHTING HUNGER!

On December 7, 2004 Virginia Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore presented the Federation of Virginia Food Banks with a check for $150,000 to support our efforts to create programs and partnerships to end hunger in our region.  The funding was about 75% of Virginia's share of a federal anti-trust settlement between 48 states and Salton corporation, maker of George Foreman grills.  The settlement mandated that the funds be used to support nonprofit organizations that served those in need and focused on issues of nutrition and health.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Attorney General and his staff!

USDA GRANT FOR FOOD STAMP PARTICIPATION ENABLES
NEW VIRGINIA NUTRITION ASSISTANCE NETWORK (V-NAN)

In a public-private partnership endeavor, the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks have launched a three-year grant project aimed at increasing participation in federal food assistance programs, including Food Stamps, WIC, and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).  Other partners include the Departments of Health, Aging, and the Cooperative Extension Service.

The project includes the most comprehensive gap analysis on hunger ever conducted in Virginia, funding for statewide awareness and education activities, including the first ever statewide hunger summit, and improved customer service.  Federation food bank agencies will be recruited to expand outreach capacity and supplied with the technology and training needed to provide benefits screening and application through new online tools.
