Premise
Five-O is the crack team of operatives comprising
Hawaii's State Police unit. Headed by lantern-jawed ex-military officer
Steve McGarrett, Five-O goes after everything from petty drug pushers to
organized crime lords and international spies -- and they just about always
get their man. The one rather slippery exception seems to be Wo Fat,
the Red Chinese agent who first appears in the pilot and returns to taunt
McGarrett throughout the show's 12-year run. McGarrett finally nabs
him in the final episode. (Or... does he???)
During the years that it aired, Hawaii Five-O
was responsible for substantially increasing Hawaii's tourist rate.
(Many visitors were disappointed to learn that Five-O was a mythical entity
[Hawaii has no state police] and that the Iolani Palace houses not McGarrett's
headquarters, but a museum.) The series' trademark phrase, uttered
at the end of at least half the episodes, was "Book 'em, Danno,
murder one!"
