Histology Rules as of 6/28/03
Supervisor
64B3-5.002(h) In the category of histology, one of the following:
1. Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnologist (HTL)level.
2. Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnician (HT) level, 10 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience post certification and 48 hours of continuing education in administration and supervision within 5 years prior to licensure.
3. Florida licensure as a histology technologist, 10 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience and 48 hours of continuing education in administration and supervision within 5 years prior to licensure.

Technologist

64B3-5.003 (3) Qualifications for Histology Technologist. For the category of histology, applicants for technologist licensure shall have one hour Board approved HIV/AIDS continuing education as state in Rule 64B3-11.005, FAC, or in subsequent rule of the Department and one of the following:
(a) Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnologist (HTL)level.
(b) Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnician (HT) level, 48 contact hours of continuing education in immunohistochemistry/advanced histologic techniques and five years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience.
(c) Graduation from a NACCLS approved associate degree histotechnology program and Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnician (HT) level.
(d) Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification at the Histotechnician (HT) level and Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC).
(e) Florida licensure as a histology technician, 48 contact hours of continuing education in immunohistochemistry/advanced histologic techniques and ten years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience.

Technician
64B3-5.004(3) Qualifications for Histology Technicians. In order to be licensed as a histology technician, an applicant for technician shall have one hour board approved HIV/AIDS continuing education, a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent, examination administered by the ASCP and one of the following:
(a) Board certification gained by examination in histology through the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists at the Histotechnician (HT) level.
(b) Successful completion of a Board approved histology training program at the technician level. (Note: Graduates of a Florida approved program that do not meet the ASCP requirements to sit for the certification exam will be allowed to sit for a special examination prepared by ASCP, written only, no practical, upon approval by the Board office. This exam will cost $250 and will not qualify for certification, but will allow those passing to obtain a technician license in order to gain the experience needed to sit for ASCP certification.)
(c) Successful completion of an accredited histology program.
(d) Successful completion of a military histology program consisting of a minimum of 1500 clock hours of study.

64B3-10.005 Scope of Practice Relative to Specialty of Licensure
11) The purpose of histology is to process cellular and tissue components through methods of fixation, dehydration, embedding, microtomy, frozen sectioning, staining, and other related procedures and techniques employed in the preparation of smears, slides, and tissues. This specialty also encompasses methods for antigen detection and other molecular hybridization testing methods where the purpose is analysis and/or quantification of cellular and tissue components for interpretation by a qualified physician. Technicians licensed in histology are limited to the performance of specimen processing, embedding, cutting, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning and mounting of preparations under the general supervision of a director, supervisor, or technologist.

Remember, only licensed histology personnel can perform those items listed in the histology scope of practice.

ASCP requirements
The HT(ASCP) application is valid for five (5) years from the date it is received. Both the practical and multiple-choice components of the examination must be successfully completed within this five year period for certification to be granted.
To be eligible for this examination category, an applicant must satisfy the requirements of at least one of the following routes:
Route 1: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histologic Technician program.
Route 2: Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry, AND one year full time acceptable experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), or an appropriately certified medical scientist.
Route 3: High school graduation (or equivalent ) AND two years full time acceptable experience in histopathology, within the last ten years, under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), or an appropriately certified medical scientist. (This route expires in 2005.)
The HTL(ASCP) application is valid for five (5) years from the date it is received. Both the practical and multiple-choice components of the examination must be successfully completed within this five year period for certification to be granted.
To be eligible for this examination category, an applicant must satisfy the requirements of at least one of the following routes:
Route 1: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry, AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last ten years. This year of experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist.
Route 2: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including the above course requirements AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnologist or Histologic Technician program
