Here is Rooster (left) and David shooting hard....  Rooster had everything he needed: good gun, rest, nutter butters.....       David was the Unlimited winner.

We had 10 shooters at our first monthly match.  All had a good time and found the match challenging.  The weather was beautiful with sunny skies and a temperature of about 60 degrees.  The wind, however, dealt everyone fits.  It was not really gusty; it just swirled and changed direction a couple times a minute... making 100's hard to come by.

Just about everyone shot 3 relays.   On the first relay, you could hear the exclamations as the wind moved our bullets around.  I had a miserable first relay with the wind moving my hits into grids I had already shot causing a negative score of -65 points!  Everyone else was having fun with the conditions, too.  On the next relay, we paid a lot more attention to what the wind flags were doing between each shot.  This helped and the scores improved. This is when the Unlimited Class match winner , David Tapp, shot his best score of 1745 out of a possible 2500 points.   Dennis Mutter made his Sportsman's Class winning score of 1155 at this time too.  On the third relay, we just about had this wind figured out but no one had done better than David had on his second relay.

John Blue was the Match Director and did a good job of making sure everyone was safe on the range.  Most of us are new to this type of competition and did not know what to expect so we listened closely to his directions.  We had expected more people to turn out for but found out that this match date conflicted with baseball and softball team try-outs.   Next month should be better with the March winds behind us.

I forgot to ask for an equipment list so I could list what worked well at this match so as I remember, this is what we used:

David Tapp shot a Volquartsen 10-22 .

Dennis Mutter shot his Thompson contender pistol.

Terry Winslett used stock 10-22 (heavy barrel) with a Tasco 8X32 World Class target scope that he bought the day before the match and also did quite well.

Rooster Killian shot his new (not even broken in good yet) Time Precision with a Jewel trigger and Leupold 36X scope.

I shot a modified 10-22 with a Hogue barrel and stock, Tasco World Class 8X32 scope and Volquartsen drop-in trigger.

Glenn and Matt Chaney both shot 10-22's

John Blue shot his Marlin lever action with a 3X9 scope.

Floyd Patterson and James Walls both used bolt action rifles.
