Welcome to the Law School Application Aid. I've removed some of the hokey anectdotes and replaced them with more information. I've also decided to include an area devoted to answering those tough questions (i.e. -- how to explain an arrest, weak grades, etc. . . . see Patching Weak Spots). I hope you find the new format more user-friendly than the old one.
I've also included 's to denote "must-see" links.
The first piece of advice seems pretty basic, but it's something that quite a few people haven't given sufficient thought to . . . Ask yourself: "Do I Really Want to Be a Lawyer?" You're certain to face at least one substantial obstacle along the way (as an applicant or law student). The middle of your first year is hardly the time to realize you haven't any idea why you're in law school.
The next question (which, by the way, is often the first question people consider) is, "Can I get into a school that suits my needs?" It's hard to be objective about ourselves, and it's even harder to accept the possibility that we might not be able to compete for the limited number of slots at our chosen schools. Many people decide they don't really want to go to law school after discovering that they have little chance (according to the numbers) of being admitted. Those who are committed, however, may be able to find a way to sell themselves and gain admission. The key here is to put together the best application possible, and that's what this site is devoted to . . . helping each applicant put his/her best foot forward.
I've divided the info into the following pages:
LSA Home - This page. A to Z - An overview of how to prepare for (and apply to) law school. If you're in doubt about where to find info on a specific question, check this page . . . it's probably there or accessible from there. It also has links to several of the best admissions-related sites on the web. LSAT Prep - Provides a sample self-prep method and links to LSAT prep courses. Personal Statement - Links to useful WWW sites and provides general advice for writing the personal statement. Letters of Recommendation - How to get strong recommendation letters. Patching Weak Points - How to address some possible questions on the application. Application Materials and Tools - Useful web resources. Where to Go - Advice on choosing the best school for you. Published Rankings - Ranking systems and my own two cents worth about ranking law schools. Waiting - An all-too-common element of the admissions process. Financial Aid - Links for scholarships, loans, FAFSA, etc. WWW Links - Nothing but links to other sites on the web. I created this for those who don't want to wade through all of my chatter. Books - Some useful books that you can find in your local library, bookstore, or advisor's office. Site of the Month - A site that highlights something you may be considering (or need to consider) during that month. This month's site - MULTI-App Software. 1L Journal - Currently an account from a 1L at BC. Email Students - Email addresses from students/graduates who've agreed to answer questions about their respective schools.
Many of you have asked for more information devoted to non-traditional law students. I was considering putting together a page on my own, but I'm glad to say that someone else has decided to put together a site dedicated to non-traditional law students. ; ) Click here to visit the non-traditional law student site!
