the conclusion of Dog Bytes

Ben Weisfoygl, Chicago Police Detective circa 1967, has had it with the Department bosses. The stiff dumped behind a Chinese restaurant turns out to be a VIP, and Ben is hot to dig into the case and save everybody’s ass. But instead, the brass have him playing tour guide to a visiting swami who preaches inner peace while dragging Ben through every stuffy museum in the city.

The Department is throwing money around on crazy new ideas to make police work “easier.” They’ve got some mangy mutt who’s supposed to find evidence, but it just gets in the way. And then there’s the computer room filled with enormous machines that whine and rumble for hours, finally spitting out streams of paper that tell you things you already know. But as for the hot computer lady Hilda… well, maybe a little Department meddling isn’t so bad.

Dog Bytes is the second Ben Weisfoygl mystery. Ben is a Brooklyn boy who came west to escape the smothering affection of his extended Jewish family. Chicago looked like a good place to put down roots when he drove into the Loop and his DeSoto broke down. The rest is history.
