You all must be wondering why there is a picture
of an old mutt on a site about the Gabby School. The reason is
that he went to the Gabby School longer than I did. Here is the
story whether you are ready or not. We moved to Gabby Heights
the summer before I started the fifth grade. When school started
in September, Bingo would follow me to school. Once there Mrs.
Blayney would take the children inside and close the door. Bingo
just did not understand this ritual, so he would sit under the
window and howl, which upset Mrs. Blayney to no end. She finally
went to the School Board to see if they could do something about
that old dog. We didn't have leash laws and that sort of thing,
so the Board did not have much choice. They decided that Bingo
was not vicious and there was no reason he should not attend school.
From that point on Bingo was allowed to sit under my desk. Soon
that got boring. We had one of those "real" school bells,
you know the kind that you pulled the rope and the big bell up
in the tower went DONG, DONG. Bingo was a quick study, he soon
figured out that when the bell rang we went inside and when it
rang again we all went out to play. Playing seemed like a lot
more fun then laying around in the classroom. Bingo would go home
when we went inside to study and when he heard that bell ring
he would come running for recess. He did that for years, even
after I graduated and went to Trinity High. Mrs. Blayney had the
same problem with him as she did with me, neither of us learned
to spell.
