Enlisted on Feb. 19, 1863 at Vermontville, at the age of 24. Serving in the Michigan Brigade under the command of Gen. Custer he was captured at Hagerstown, MD on July 6, 1863. He was paroled, then again captured June 11, 1864 at Trevillian Station, VA. Paroled a second time he was admitted to Harper Hospital in Detroit then discharged on Aug. 12, 1865.
