OLD MATCH REPORTS

Match Report - Saturday 31 March

Edinburgh Northern RFC 3 Earlston 41

(Half Time: ENRFC 3 Earlston 24)

Due to a string of player unavailabilities this was always going to be a hard match for Northern. Kenny Telford abandoned his position at lock for the 2nds to take up the scrum half’s jersey, John Alden appeared at hooker and Miles Harman found himself with a No 10 on his back.

Predictably the Earlston pack was the greatest threat and with a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch Northern were starved of ball and pinned back into their own 22. Earlston turned pressure into a succession of three penalties before Northern were able to reply with a Mark Stuart penalty in front of the posts.

Sadly this effort only spurred Earlston to greater efforts and the Northern scrum conceded a push over try in the corner which was followed by yet another penalty and a neat converted try.

Northern started the second half brightly but their efforts up front in the first half had taken their toll and soon another try was leaked. After this the game ebbed and flowed with Northern unable to take full advantage of the wind, which in typical fashion had by now dropped slightly. Just after the middle of the half the Earlston No 6 was sin binned and he was folwed to the sidelines by Mike Horner for a technical offence. With Earlston back up to a full complement a try was scored followed by a try and conversion right on the final whistle.

Match Report – 24 March 2001

Edinburgh Northern 3  Forrester  11

On a dreich day at Inverleith Park Northern once again contrived to lose a match that was eminently winnable. Silly handling errors and lapses of concentration combined to let Forrester hold on to their position at the top on the league.

An early penaly by Duncan Dow separated the teams for most of the first half but gradually the Forrester pack asserted their greater will to win and after an equalising penalty Forrester managed a scrambled try in the corner which was unconverted.

The first half ended 3 – 8 and the second half turned into a dour battle with Northern unable to break down the gritty Forrester defence. A penalty in front of the posts sealed the game for Forrester although an exciting run from behind the goal line inspired by Simon Kerr and Justin Stencel just failed to win Northern a bonus point.
