Introduction | purpose:
This site attempts to reference and catalog over 700 books of Russian literature in English translation. The term Russian literature is used rather loosely; it is meant to encompass many genres of Tsarist, Russian and Soviet literature (to name only a few genres). The titles listed include works from a broad range of the many ethnic and geographic cultures (Kirgiz, Ukraine, etc.,) related to what was commonly referred to as "Russia", the "Soviet Union", etc. Coming eventually, a backlog of approximately 200 Eastern and Central European titles to add to this list (ranging from Albania to the newly independent Montenegro). And I've got another backlog of approximately 100 Russian and Soviet anthologies (folktales, short stories, etc.) that may be added as well.

Introduction | history of this site:
Throughout Russia's turbulent history, many authors of Russian literature perished and barely managed to leave behind a trail of their works - a trail made tenuous by the rapidly evolving social and political climate. Leaders, rulers, despots came and went -- each condemning hundreds and often thousands of books to the fate of the literal and metaphorical underground vaults.

These Russian literature books survived through the perseverence of exiled writers, the resources of foreign presses, the courage of relatives and friends hoarding secret manuscripts, and the forgiving hand of time and circumstance. One day I decided to collect them (and slowly read them), and it occurred to me that perhaps others might find something useful in what I gathered. This site was created in February, 1997 and parts of it existed in 1996.That's the way it looked then; and it looks the same now--another proud relic of mid-90s so-called web design.

Physically, the beauty of books published during the Soviet era by Russian publishers such as Progress Publishers, Foreign Languages Publishing House, and Dnipro Publishers is breathtaking -- gorgeous woodcut illustrations grace dust jackets and dusty forgotten pages. At its best, the writing in these Soviet-era books is equally beautiful in its directness, emotion, and the way in which complex and volatile social and political issues are evoked, defended or attacked with a deftness often belied by an almost naive simplicity. At its worst, it presents a boring and formulaic attempt to create yet another morality tale for a weary, desparate readership. Admittedly, the complexities (and horrors) of Communism make it difficult to appreciate the writing without condemning the writer and the philosophy.

Introduction | content:
No book, regardless of its politics, should be left to sit and to gather dust. This list includes everything from the strongest Soviet-style propoganda to familiar Tolstoian classics that we consider to be "Russian" literature. And it is a fascinating journey through the cultural and political events that led to the break-up of the Soviet Union, and offers a glimpse into works that teeter on the edge of revolution and independence (and often, more revolution). It is not time- or genre-specific - although you will notice a strong concentration of Soviet-era works. I add to this list periodically. The information listed under "Other Works & Info" is gleaned informally from the introductions, prefaces, and bibliographies located in every book. Take it with a grain of salt, please.

Introduction | how the site is organized:
Works are sorted alphabetically by author's last name, and within each author by its title.
